I'm having trouble getting sound out of my system. I have the above motherboard, which has a VIA Apollo KT600 chipset with a VIA VT8235 sound chip. I have installed the snd-via82xx module in /etc/rc.conf
I'm playing around in KDE right now, and it shows the sound card. I'm not sure where I go from here, and appreciate any suggestions.

Did you install Alsa? Check out the following link:
Cheers.
I have nothing to say, and I am saying it.

Install alsa-utils if you haven't already. You don't have to use Alsamixer, KDE stores your preferences for KMix...

I hadn't installed alsa, but now have; while Noatun acts like it's playing the test .wav file, there's no sound. I plugged in a pair of headphones to make sure my speakers hadn't gone bad or something; no sound there either. aplay at the command line also acts like it's playing, but no sound.
my lsmod output looks like this, and everything seems to show up(I'm not sure how to format this so it comes up in nice columns)

Tried unmuting the soundcard? Sometimes it's muted for some strange reason (check with amixer).
Offline
There's an option, "IEC985 Output", that has to be unmuted. You might also have to mute "IEC985 Capture Monitor", but I'm not certain about that.
Offline
I went through and confirmed the card was unmuted; played with the EIC985 both ways, nothing has changed. I've dug up some suggestions from other sources I'll be trying out; from the research it appears that this sound system has been problematic in other distros. I'll post here (success or failure) for posterity ;-)
If I do have to give up on this, any suggestions for a decent sound card?

I dug around in the dmesg output and found this:
via82xx: Assuming DXS channels with 48k fixed sample rate.
Please try dxs_support=1 or dxs_support=4 option
and report if it works on your machine.
Can anyone tell me what this means? Where would I put these items?
