Hey, I'm setting up Arch on an EeePC and all that jazz, but I'm stuck. Which DE should I use? GNOME is a bit boggy, I don't want to imagine KDE's speed.
Could anybody point me in the correct direction on this? I want something that isn't hard to set up, so what I'm probably saying is to somehow get GNOME to load up way faster or have something else. GNOME's Nautalis settings menu is cut off on my meager 1024x600 display so I don't really want stuff like that.
I've been looking in to XFCE4, but it lacks icons by default.
Can anybody assess my situation?

I personally use XMonad which works like a charm .... but you would probably want either XFCE or OpenBox. No worries about the icons, just install idesk.

For something fast and easy to setup I'd go with Fluxbox or Openbox (try LXDE if you want something like a DE), check out the Archbang project, I bet they have some functional Openbox setups you can use.
On my Eeepc (10") I use Awesome. Generally the tiling WMs are great on a small screen, but they are also generally a bit harder to setup.

how about XFCE? one of the most lightweight DE's there is
or a standalone Window Manager? like Openbox, Compiz or Pekwm?
or if you're keen on trying something new, you should try tiling WM, they are extremely powerful on a netbook simply because of the fact that you really only need to utilize the keyboard.
Good tiling WM's include: Dwm, Xmonad, Awesome, Wmii etc.
Guides for all of them can be found in the Archwiki

In my netbook (Atmo N270 1.6 Ghz + 1 GB ram) i have installed KDEmod and work all fine, incluse with composition effects actived. And Gnome with Compiz effects working is other good option, faster than KDE (ok, ok, in my subjetive opinion, with no benchmark but with hard daily usage bases).

I'd like to know more about the different types of managers (tabbed, stacked, tiled, etc) if any of you would like to tell or point me to links.

Yeah, but it is mainly booting up speed.

I used openbox on my 901 before moving to dwm. Both have pages on the wiki that will explain how to install and set them up. Neither require any significant effort...

I'll have to throw my vote in with musca. I run that on my eee 1000H with some space padded off on the side for conky to tell me battery life, network strength, the time, etc. Works perfectly on my eee for the purpose of use in class.

I'm using Fluxbox with LXDE's apps, and it works great. It took me two days of work to tweak everything, but is well worth it. Fluxbox does stacking and tabbing. Here's a link to Fluxbox's features page. It doesn't have stable configuration tools, but it's dead easy to work with if you look at Fluxbox's config files.

I use fvwm. it is extremely powerful and customizable. you can create menus for all your needs, it's very easy to setup the function keys, it supports transparencies and shading and, most important, when I run it on my eeePC900 I have a clean desktop with only 28MB of ram used.
