Currently I have:
320gb
500gb
500gb
All in LVM on my desktop at /media/stuff. I have a 1.5TB on the way and I plan to take one of the 500GB out and put in the 1.5TB. Of course I would like to move all data from that 500gb that I take out, on to the 1.5TB. What is the best/safe way to proceed for this? Just being cautious here, would I:
- Install the 1.5TB, boot in and just move all data from the 500GB over to it, then remove the 500GB?
or
- Install the 1.5TB, add it to LVM, move all data from 500GB over to it and then remove the 500GB? (If this is ideal, how would I move all data on just one physical volume ie., /dev/sdc over to it??)
TIA for any help

If you plan to remove the 500GB drive you should not add the 1.5TB drive to your current volume group. Rather, you should create a totally new LVM setup on your new drive that doesn't interact at all with your old drive. Then just copy the data over.

Ha ha! Didn't even think to just move everything over to the 1.5 and start a new LVM (d'oh!) :S
And just to be sure, when I move all the data from the current LVM > new 1.5TB, is it safe to just get rid of that existing LVM or are there any pertinent system files or anything? I doubt it but just checking. Thanks fflarex

It should be safe to get rid of it, but don't delete anything until after you've tested it out and know that it boots without any trouble.

Thanks fflarex, my HD arrived today so I will report how it goes on Sunday when I go through the process.
Another question: my server has an LVM consisting of:
500GB
320GB
I plan to take out the 320GB and put in the 500GB from my desktop. There is 613GB used on the server, I would be unable to move it all to the incoming 500GB, so I think in this case I would be required to take the data that resides on the 320GB itself and move it to the new 500??

That question is little bit trickier, and I don't have any first-hand experience with something like that. If I had to do it, I'd start by looking into the pvmove command. A quick google search for "lvm remove pv" also turned up this howto on the Ubuntu forums.
