After yesterday's upgrade X froze, funny it didn't happen straight off, only after a while. Tried downgrading the kernel, no result, but back to normal after downgrading xorg-server and xorg-utils (NOT xorg-server-utils). Which of the two is the culprit i don't know.

Are you running nvidia drivers by any chance? Ive had long running issues with nvidia and after the update everything started working flawlessly. However, I get home to find system was not responding to anything, rebooted and now I have the same problem I always had.
I removed my xorg.conf file so im not loading the nvidia driver and Im currently using only one of my 3 monitors till I find a fix. Ill try downgrading X and see how it pans out.
Edit: I should mention I am running the downgraded 190.53 driver

I was also having some strange lock-ups with X yesterday. The upgrade of xorg-server from 1.7.5.901-1 to 1.7.5.901-2 seems to have fixed it.

Yes, nvidia, but never any problems..
You can more easily add <!nvidia> to blacklist the module in /etc/rc.conf if you don't want it, but then you'll probably get lousy graphics. Did you try playing around with nvidia-settings ?
There is also an issue described in the beginner's guide about input hotplugging causing X to freeze and workarounds to fix this.
Hope this helps.

I've had this problem for some time myself and the recent upgrade has manifested in an even weirder problem.
Using Fluxbox with Firefox and Terminal open will lock up the system once per day at least and sometimes more requiring a hard reboot.
Yesterday with the upgrade using Fluxbox and having Firefox open I cannot minimize the window using the minimize button or the system locks everything but mouse movement (i.e. no left or right click) requiring a hard reboot and is reproducible 100% of the time. Oddly, clicking in the taskbar will minimize the window and restore.
Methinks the kernel issues of late are the cause and that either downstream hasn't caught up or that we are finally seeing what we I have feared for a while with bugs being ignored upstream. I am not in front of the system at the moment but will report versions and conditions when I get home. This is using the NVidia blob.

OK, just got home and did an update and xorg reports X.Org X Server 1.7.5.901 (1.7.6 RC 1) so I guess this new version fixes things somewhat. I'm still waiting to see if the freezes happen but the minimize button now works correctly. Too much breakage lately.

That version is what froze X here. Now i'm at
[2010-03-09 13:32] upgraded xorg-server (1.7.5.901-1 -> 1.7.3.902-1)
[2010-03-09 13:33] upgraded xorg-utils (7.6-1 -> 7.5-1)
Which is what i had from last time i updated, and everything's fine.

I have similar issues as well: intermittant lockups requiring program closing or reboots, left mouse button not recognized on a bluetooth mouse. This is using the radeon drivers. Downgrading xorg-server to 1.7.5-1 and xorg-utils to 7.5-1 solved problems in my case.

xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.When I go to downgrade my Xorg packages(xorg-server and xorg-utils) to previous versions using the following commands;
pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-server-1.7.5-1-i686.pkg.tar.gzAnd likewise for xorg-utils, I get a bunch of error messages when "checking for file conflicts..." about files (mainly header files) already existing in the filesystem, followed by "errors occurred, no packages were upgraded".
I'm not sure what to do next, can anyone help?

Hello ah312 and welcome in the forum
I don't know if I can give you a solution to your problem, but here is what I think I can advise you :
1) As your problem is not related to the thread subject, it will be preferable for you to open a new thread, with a subject title "Xorg server doesn't start anymore after a system upgrade".
Before opening that new thread, come and edit your message in that thread, deleting the content and saying that you open another thread.
2) Give more infos about your installation
3) Read the wiki, look into your log files in /var/log
4) Finally, why do you want to downgrade to xorg-server 1.7.5-1 ?
Because from your post, your machine seemed to work with xorg-server 1.7.5.901-1
But before answering, open the other thread.

Thanksfor the reply berbae,
I managed to get it all working again by downgrading with the -f option. I then upgraded to the latest Xorg server and it still all works.
I will keep in mind what you said for next time!
