I spent the whole evening trying to install xfce, openbox, fluxbox, kde and lastly gnome on a new Arch system, but they all fail on the package 'cairo-1.8.8-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz'. Does that really mean that I can't do any graphics work on my new system?
I tried severall different mirrors: they all choke on that cairo thing...

Not at all. What is the error. What mirors have you tried? Are they up-to-date?

The error is: failed retrieving file cairo-1.8.8-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz. I tried almost every mirror in the mirrorlist file (i.e. the file that comes with a new installation.
How can I check if those mirrors are up to date?

Have you updated pacman since it's a new install?

As above give:

followed by

The file is actually "cairo-1.8.10-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz" so you mirror looks well out of date. I'm using the livid penguin one for the UK. You can check here:

I did the second one, but not the first one, if I remember well. Let's try that.
