No sound!

Ok, I know this is a re-post of a thread in another room of the fourm but I didn't really understand what the fix was and no one responded to my request for clarification.
I'm using KDE3.4 and have jackd and ALSA installed but neither of them are working when I try to set my audio prefs in KDE I get:

Error when initalizing the sound driver

Couldn't connect to jackd

The sound server will continue, using the NULL output device

Then when I try to restart jackd manually:

[root@Mario etc]# jackd -d alsa
jackd 0.99.0

I don't know what the deal is!   Help please! :?

Re: No sound!

It could just be udev and you don't have permissions as a regular user.  Add the user to the audio group.  Did you do the qjackctl thing or suid the gui?

Re: No sound!

Yeah, I am using udev and the user is in the audio group in my /etc/groups (is there anywhere else that permission needs to be?) but root doesn't get sound either, and since root is 'god' I figured I was doing something wrong.  And about the gui I am using it.

Re: No sound!

You might want to just switch ARTS to ALSA output, unless you're a real serious audio buff or something.

Re: No sound!

well apparently all of the inputs have to be muted for it to work at all, it sounds like a$$ but it's better than nothing
