Poor performance on Intel 82815 graphics

Just installed Arch on my old computer to test some lightweight applications and DE. It is an old Dell desktop, 1 Ghz processor, 384 MB RAM, 10 GB HDD, Intel 82815 graphics (xf86-video-intel driver). Xfce4 is fine, responsive but I have a problem with multimedia content.

Mp3 songs are ok with mpd, however dvds and flash videos (youtube) are almost not playable - poor video / sound performance. I tried several different apps but with no significant change (Midori performed better then Chromium though).

I suppose this is caused by the old graphics chip but it did work pretty well on Windows on the same machine. I noticed several mentions of xf86-video-intel legacy driver for old chipsets but it seems it is not in the repository. Would this driver help performance wise? Or is any more lightweight windows manager/application a way?

I understand this HW is a piece of crap, but my girlfriend would use it for web browsing, music etc. And compared to Windows XP the environment itself is faster and generally smoother, yet these key elements would make me revert back in this case.

Thanks for any recommendations guys.

What's your output of glxinfo | grep render?

In my experience, sometimes the driver just "decides" to switch to software rasterizer, which is morale-compromisingly slow. The quick-fix is fix permissions on /dev/dri/cardx(card0 in my case).

Did you check out the Intel graphics page at our wiki?

Re: Poor performance on Intel 82815 graphics

Output of glxinfo | grep render:

../common/drirenderbuffer.c:69: driNewRenderbuffer: Assertion `format == 0x1908 || format == 0x8050 || format == 0x8058 || format == 0x81A5 || format == 0x81A6 || format == 0x81A7 || format == 0x8D48' failed

And yes I read the wiki entry for Intel. Wiki says install xf86-video-intel-legacy, yet it is not in the repo (obsolete I guess) and nothing more. I suppose it should be edited.
