Trouble installing Xorg

Hello,

I just installed Archlinux and did the 'pacman -Syy' and 'pacman -Syu' and now trying to install xorg. I ran the 'pacman -S xorg' to install and it tells me to install another whole group of packages, which I accept but then I run into problems with this package:

error: failed retrieving file 'fontcacheproto-0.3.1-1-any.pkg.tar.gz'

Blocking me from the install of xorg... Another thing I'm totally new to Arch!!

Thank you!!

Re: Trouble installing Xorg

looks like you can't get the package from the server you're using.

either you wait some time until it is available again or you change the mirror pacman is using located in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

Re: Trouble installing Xorg

Simple: The mirror you are using does not have that package.
Perhaps because of a recent update to Xorg or because your mirror is not up-to-date.

Try using another mirror.
You can comment out your current mirror and uncomment others in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

Re: Trouble installing Xorg

Did you ran rankmirror script or even better installed reflector?
rankmirror ranks mirrors by speed and reflector can rank them both by speed and how updated they are.
So if you use reflector you'll always have mirrors that are synced...

For "easier" way to use reflector install powerpill or bauerbill from Xyne-any repo both of them are pacman wrappers that use reflector and aria2 to speed-up and use most synced mirrors.
bauerbill can also install AUR and can use ABS. powerpill doesn't.

Whatever I do, I always end up with something horribly mis-configured.

Re: Trouble installing Xorg

I tried different mirrors but none of them have the package... But if I understand correctly, atcp some packages are available only at certain time?? btw, even archlinux.org server didn't have the package...

rankmirrors didn't work for me... I had to uncomment my own mirrors.

I'll look into reflector!

another piece of info: I'm running arch linux on virtualbox.

Re: Trouble installing Xorg

Can you wget it from here? ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/extra/os/any/fo … pkg.tar.gz

Then you can pacman -U it to install, and then continue with what you were doing.

and you always did pacman -Syyu after that? Can you install anything?

The versionnumber 3.1-1 seems to be incorrect. It should be 1.3-1... Have you copied it or rewrote?

But if I understand correctly, atcp some packages are available only at certain time?? btw, even archlinux.org server didn't have the package...

Sometimes, server are not up. (or too old.)
Packages are always available if the server is up (and the repo includes the specific package.)

As indicated above, you probably did not run pacman -Syy after changing mirrors.

Re: Trouble installing Xorg

No I think I understood the basics of pacman and everytime I did changes to the mirrorlist I ran 'pacman -Syy' and 'pacman -Syu' and I was able to download and install other packages.

@ZaQ Yeah sorry I did copy down the wrong version number. Yours is right.

@surgat_ That did the trick and X server is working fine now.

Thanks all!!
