Step 1 would be to run ifconfig -a in order to see if eth0 has really disappeared.
Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.

I have an Eee PC and this happened to me,
It is rather silly but what works is:
turn off the computer, pull the battery, leave it out for 30 seconds, put the battery back in and then turn it back on.

I try to take out the batteri later... Can it be some bug in the bios?

As grey said above, do a 'ifconfig -a' and post the output.

I updated the bios and installed ubuntu 9.10 and the network card started to workshops again. I will install arch this weekend. I comeback when i have installed it. The remove batteri fix did not work for me...
