[SOLVED] broken pm-utils hibernation (suspend to swap)

everything was working fine and then all of a sudden whenever i execute "sudo pm-hibernate" i get normal behavior (how to check that the hook is running fine?) but something is wrong under the hood or resume is not working because pushing the power button powers on the system without the hibernation file (system behaves as if i just executed "sudo shutdown -h now" instead of reading the hibernation file).  the result of this is that the root filesystem has to recover from journal every time and i loose everything that was open/running.

what diagnostic info should i be looking at.

i am thankful for this problem because it gives me a chance to learn more about pm-utils and HAL.

i sometimes have trouble following the wiki

TIA
