Actually Arch (up-to-date, dbus and hal running) detects that external USB drive as reiserFS, and mounts it accordingly... (= just a couple of directories visible). It's a single NTFS 200G volume, I just want proper read-only access under Arch (no "captive" and such stuff installed).
Any idea on how to modify configuration files (leaving aside static fstab entries) to access it properly?

I think you need to compile the ntfs module.

The system can read NTFS volumes- actually I have no problems mounting an XP partition present.
I just don't want to create a permanent fstab entry for the USB disk, but rather let fstab-sync manage it, but I am clueless about the proper hotplug settings.
