Suggestions / tips about new hardware with intel core i5 processor

Hi,

I am planning to buy following system

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/topic … l=de&s=dhs

I would like to install arch on it.

If somebody has suggestions/tips about this hardware, they will be very useful to me.

regards,
Hardik

Is there an option to get Nvidia graphics?

Ι have i5 750. I hadn't had to change something in particular. Everything works with no problem. It is an excellent processor.

And for god's shake, NO ATI. Change it with Nvidia.

Re: Suggestions / tips about new hardware with intel core i5 processor

I am not sure, if I can change the graphics card or not.

What disasters /  issues  do I expect with ATI, especially this chip ATI Raedon HD 5450 (1GB) ?

And probably, how to fix those problems ?

update:
I figured out it is not possible to get nvidia with this processor at Dell. They have then core i5 650 with nvidia which is 200 euros more expensive than this one !

Hardik

QFT

Find another deal if you have to. Not only nvidia binary drivers work beautifully (and opensource nouveau driver looks extremely promising) but you will also benefit from this incredible piece of code that is libvdpau. also, it's not like nvidia is great and ati is just standard, nvidia is great and ati is known to s#ck b&lls on linux.

core i5 750 + HD 5770 (with catalyst 10.1) here = all perfect

With a core i5 you don't need video acceleration...

Catalyst with HD5xxx cards seems to work pretty stable. On 4 months  only have one system freeze and i don't know it was graphic related. My graphic server never crashed!

Re: Suggestions / tips about new hardware with intel core i5 processor

Have a look at the catalyst AUR page comments to see how great they are. latest one:

Any news on support for xorg-server > 1.7?

also, using all your cpu power to decode video is pretty lame actually. back to single tasking...
if you already have an ATI card then you can deal with it; if you can avoid buying one, do it by all means.

Re: Suggestions / tips about new hardware with intel core i5 processor

"Probably"  tomorrow a new catalyst driver will be released with 1.7 support and direct 2d acceleration. But not supporting latest xorg doesn't mean is not  a good driver. For me, catalyst works STABLE and kwin effects are FAST, that is all i need.

Re: Suggestions / tips about new hardware with intel core i5 processor

seriously, it even has been dropped from arch official repo... you can use an ATI card with linux, I did it for years. my point is, if you're about to buy something, then this is not the right choice. BTW, your expectations from your video card are very low, wm effects and well... stability, which is the minimum you can expect from any piece of code... I bet you could even use the open source driver for that and finally get rid of your 192d 19h old xorg-server tongue [1]

Re: Suggestions / tips about new hardware with intel core i5 processor

Before I bought ATI I was using an integrated GMA intel card with open source drivers and always had crashes and lock ups, it was really frustrating. With catalyst and my ati card NEVER had issues, except lack of composite with 10.2 driver.

What is the problem using and old xorg-server? 1.6 Works fine here. What can you do with 1.7 server that i can´t do with 1.6?

At this moment open source drivers has crappy support for HD 5xxx generation.

sorry, can't remember the state of my machine 6 months ago tongue

even worse than I thought. OP, do NOT buy ATI. (shameless trolling, I admit)

seriously, why would you recommend something like this http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29111 (see comments).

anyway, time for me to disappear from this thread.

Re: Suggestions / tips about new hardware with intel core i5 processor

OK guys,

I found something else. It is Dell Studio XPs series with the same processor but nvidia card it is

GeForce GT 220 with 1 GB ( I hope it is DDR3 )

Here the specification  ...

http://www.technikdirekt.de/main/de/388 … Country=de

So please give inputs about this option. Here I have to pay atleast 80-90 euros more, but I will if the deal is comparable with the previous one.

I have following questions regarding this

1. Is the graphics card comparable with ATI Raedon HD 5450 ?

2. Is the overall system worth buying with extran 80-90 euros ?

regards,
Hardik

Re: Suggestions / tips about new hardware with intel core i5 processor

I also would say Nvidia over ATI. But going back to the original question, I use i5 here and it is awesome. A 1TB drive also gives me plenty of space.

I don't know if you've considered it or not, but you could also take a look at building your own. That way if you preferred Nvidia over ATI you could do that, or if you didn't want Windoze with it you don't need to get that.  I just built my computer a few months ago and saved some $ by using the harddrive from my old machine (which i just got a little under a year before that), using the dvd drives from the old machine (which still worked fine), and not getting Windoze.

@Bregol,

Thanks for the suggestion. But first, I don't have so much time and second, I have doughts that my self assembled system will not be tuned like the system by some company.

Re: Suggestions / tips about new hardware with intel core i5 processor

About ATI, also remember that probably the day they finally release a Catalyst driver supporting xorg 1.7, the next day will be the release of xorg 1.8 (which is close) and then you will spend another year having no xorg updates and probably compatibility problems with latest apps depending on xorg 1.8. Yes, I'm an nvidia user and I'm happy smile

On the other hand, if you don't care too much for high performance 3D acceleration or video acceleration then go with the open source radeon driver and you will even get kms as a bonus.

On yet another hand, I have a friend that is a seasoned linux and gentoo user (many, many years), not only compiles kernels routinely but can also dig into and understand kernel code. So you can say Linux is not new to him. This guy has an ATI card at home and let me tell you, he is not a happy camper. He even wrote to ATI  support asking about latest xorg. They blew him off saying the drivers are provided 'as is' and that they cannot help him. He replied  saying that he will never buy an ATI card again. End of story.

Just food for thought.

Re: Suggestions / tips about new hardware with intel core i5 processor

This is a review of a 512MB version of the 5450, and they compare it against a 512MB Nvidia 220. You might find it useful for your question about how the 2 cards compare:
