Some can do a repository for catalyst-old ?

What would be the easiest way to use Catalyst-old on an up-to-date Arch setup ???

The best way would be that some user sets up a repository containing all the outdated packages needed to make catalyst-old work, like Vi0l0's repo for catalyst (which includes all the old xorg packages). You could then add that repo at the top of the list in pacman.conf and you're done: pacman -Syy and pacman -Suu. Then you could upgrade your system with pacman -Syu without problems (clearly, as long as the programs you wish to use don't need up-to-date packages).
Obviously you would need someone who will actually set up the repo, and this could be hard. Much more simple should be to switch to open drivers, if you have the possibility to do it...

With support of tons of Ati cards created before hd 2xxx and up cards, this repository is more than needed cause Archlinux is rated as a lightweight distro so many users use older hardware, mine is just a 2-3 years old laptop, damn Ati, never again !!!

Mine is 5 years old, using the radeon driver, all is fine.

General principle around here: if you want something done, and it's not compatible with the official Arch approach, try doing it yourself. If you make a start, others may come to help you out, but just asking "can someone do this?" usually doesn't work.

Sorry but I'm not a programmer and an high-level linux user so ...

I said "try". You don't need to be a programmer for this, and the only way you will become a high-level linux user is by trying new things, and learning as you go.

Up to you though.

There is a repo for the old X.org: http://chakra-project.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?id=1829

I think that your first post on "AMD/ATI Bar & Grill" forum was most important:

I belive that there will be no problems in building catalyst packages, i can help you with that, but thats the last step on this road.
The most important is - i have no idea where you can get xorg-server<1.6 and other needed xorg packages (i don't know which ones exactly cuz with major xorg release there are some changes within packages). I have checked ARM but there are only xorg-server > 1.7 packages...
Chakra's xorg-old repo won't help you also.
And the kernel could be problematic - but you can always build it from sources.
It will be very good if some user that still have old packages share it with you/us - so we may help you and probably also others.
@spiky25: one more thing - what architecture you are using?

What's wrong with the open source radeon driver?  I have a laptop with the Xpress 200M and 3D acceleration works fine with the radeon driver.  Seems like it would be easier to solve your problem there than hack ATI's crappy old catalyst driver into working.

I can't play a silly directx9 game needing a geforce 2 64Mo integrated card while I have a 256Mo Ati integrated card ...

I have followed wineappdb page perfectly and on windows the game work pretty well and it seem even more snappy on linux but when it come to real 3D it's a flop ...

So catalyst-old seem the only way but I have just tested the stable ati driver (not AUR one), it's too slow to play but seem enough to play it,
now my challenge is to make wine faster a little and add better video drivers then it will work easily ...

Re: Some can do a repository for catalyst-old ?

Hi I'm the current maintainer of catalyst-old and I'm currently install an xorg-server 1.5.3 since the Archlinux svn from a not so fresh archlinux installation with an Archlinux Core 2009.02 in order to use this drivers. I succeeded to install xorg-server 1.5.3 with a bunch of its other elder packages and I'm at the point to install catalyst-old drivers. Stay tune!

Re: Some can do a repository for catalyst-old ?

thank you for this package.
now i have full 3d on my x700 in laptop.
easy way to do this is download old arch-live iso image from
http://godane.wordpress.com/
{ i much thanks for this blog and iso releases ,coz its only way to have old packages}.
i booted live cd (from february 2009) with kernel 2.6.28 and xorg 1.5.3 and installed on my laptop.
there are bug in Larchin installer so you must rewrite some code in startinstall.py module in /opt.

then i booted into new instalation. make some little changes in pacman.conf in IgnorePkg
and edit catalyst-old for no patches into 2.6.28. and voila !!!

seems to be working on 110%.

i think that this may be help somebody.
cya. i will go to play Penumbra :]

oh my laptop is old Acer Aspire 3024wlmi with x700.
