New installl>>>Login?>>>Embarrassing.

I just installed Arch and believe all is correct with that.

Rebooted and they asked for a login.  I don't recall giving one.  I recall the unix password I entered.  Tried "root" and many others...

What is the correct login name?  I believe I entered a host name too but that did not work either.

Did you create an user?
How you get and login manager without setting an user?

The password you entered should indeed have been for "root". User names and passwords are case-sensitive.

Worse-case scenario: Password recovery

Welcome to Arch, first of all! smile

The installer should have asked you for a root password – if you haven't already done so, restart the installer and specify one. You'll have to install your "real" username manually afterwards.

Also, you might want to read the Beginners' Guide if you haven't yet.

Edit: Typo. Also, pointone beat me to it…

When you installed Arch you set a root password. It's the last step before finishing the installation..

Even if you haven't installed a login manager there's a standard login prompt.

Re: New installl>>>Login?>>>Embarrassing.

entered "joe" as host name and an eight character unix password (later on) at that point of installation....

when I take out my disc and re-boot it's asking me for a login and password.

I've tried all combinations....

Can someone think of a possible way around this or a solution?

Happened twice so far...two separate installs.

Re: New installl>>>Login?>>>Embarrassing.

Perhaps you would be able to enter ...root...

Then do....

#passwd

This may give you a unix response ... if so enter a passwd like ..joe..

Enter the unix passwd again.

You will now have a root passwd.

Re: New installl>>>Login?>>>Embarrassing.

Thanks for the suggestion....no luck...Changed the password as you suggested though and that was it....

It leads me to believe that my problem is with the login name and not password.  If "root", "arch" or "joe" does not work do you know what may?

Thanks again.

The login name is root, that's for sure..
