Re: Blank screen during boot

acpi_os="Linux" does NOT help in my case (Samsung X20 laptop with onboard Intel 915GM/GMS/910GML graphics chipset), nor does any other variation that you can find on the Internet, like
acpi_osi=Linux
acpi_osi=linux
acpi_osi=!Linux
acpi_osi="Windows 2000"
etc...

In all cases, the screen always turns blank on KMS startup, and stays that way until reboot...

The nomodeset kernel option is still the only way for me to have a working screen with Arch, which is now becoming a problem since the xorg graphics driver for intel chipsets now depends on KMS being enabled...

So... Any other suggestions/solutions/ideas?

I did, but that's only a temporary solution... How long do you think it'll take until a new kernel or xorg breaks xf86-video-intel 2.9.1 ...?

So I'd rather get KMS working if that's possible...
Does anybody have more info on that? Is the "blank screen" issue on certain graphics chipsets a know problem with the KMS developers (whoever they are)? Should I just hope for future kernel versions to fix it, or is there something else I can try?

Re: Blank screen during boot

Is there any update on a fix for this issue yet (other than downgrading intel driver - which works thankfully)? I have got a Dell C400 laptop with nomodeset kernel option in grub, anyone got one of these laptops to work with the latest version of the intel driver?

sas,

Did you ever get this to work? I have the same graphics card as you and I'm having the exact same problem.

I have this same problem, which has got to the point where a tortuous workaround is required, downgrading xorg-server, intel driver and all related packages.   No solution yet anyone?

Actually, as I stated in another thread, the problem disappeared on my computer after some package upgrade three months ago. (i.e. with the newest package versions of xorg server and intel driver, modesetting works now, so I don't get a blank screen anymore.)

Before that, I had to disable kernel modesetting and keep the intel driver downgraded to xf86-video-intel-2.9.1-1 (because later versions depended on modesetting being enabled).
(I didn't have to downgrade xorg-server or other related packages though).

Re: Blank screen during boot

Lucky you.  New xorg and intel drivers = blank screen for me (Toshiba equium, intel GM965 chip).

I have had another workaround pointed out to me though (thanks MrElendig) - adding "video=SVIDEO-1:d" to the grub entry does the trick, and enables me to use the newer driver.

Re: Blank screen during boot

I bought yesterday a notebook Acer Aspire 4720z with X3100 (Intel GM965) and did a fresh installation. So happens that if I boot without a monitor plugged on vga port I get a blank LVDS. Plugging the monitor solves the problem.

Tested the workaround mentioned above, adding "video=SVIDEO-1:d" to the grub, and got an operational notebook.

Re: Blank screen during boot

I apologize for necroposting a lot but this problem still persist.
I have a netbook with Intel GMA 3150 ("Pineview GM") and kernel 2.6.38-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT.
i915 is a module.
I've tried all advices I could found in the Web. Nothing works but the one I haven't tried yet (a custom kernel with builtin necessary modules). Maybe, it isn't too worthy to make so much effort. During boot the screen is blank for approx. 10-11secs only.
Only that fact that KMS is still buggy on Intel GMA is confusing. And I can't see boot messages. AFAICS, It is related to framebuffer and how it interacts with i915.
Should I send the bugreport to kernel team? May I hope they will fix that so there will not be a need for a custom kernel?
Maybe, I've missed something and there is a solution without recompiling of the core?

Thank you very much in advance for any advices.

Netbook is eMachines 350-21G16I

P.S. Spend a lot of a time trying to resolve this problem so it's ok now to spend something more...

Re: Blank screen during boot

You might update your kernel. Version 2.6.39 solved a few of my Intel headaches.  YMMV.

Re: Blank screen during boot

Unfortunately, that didn't helped me sad

kernel:
Linux serenity 2.6.39-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Jun 7 05:49:02 UTC 2011 i686 Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N450 @ 1.66GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

drivers:
extra/intel-dri 7.10.3-1
    Mesa DRI drivers for Intel
extra/xf86-video-intel 2.15.0-2 (xorg-drivers xorg)
    X.org Intel i810/i830/i915/945G/G965+ video drivers

kernel:
core/kernel26 2.6.39.1-1 (base)

P.S. modprobe msg went away somehow... Just blank screen for ~10-12secs.

KMS works because I can see appropriate mode switching for about 1-3secs. before blanking.
Furthermore, during blank screen boot process is going on in usual way just I can't see anything but after that time screen is visible again for a moment before switching to X.
Hope that's understandable despite my English, sorry...

Re: Blank screen during boot

I was just having this issue on my laptop fresh net install. I was looking through this thread and decided to try and help myself along with others here. I was able to fix my video blanking and X issues by simply adding i915.modeset=1 to the end of my bootline in grub. Booted up instantly after this and I was able to use my machine as expected. So you should be able to find a respective option for your graphics adapter.

If I can more directly help anyone, or explain in more detail please let me know.

My source https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … Setting.29

Have a look there and then see if you can find a similar option for your computer. Remember, you can edit your boot line from the boot loader during boot up. Just press 'e' on the line, press 'e' on the boot line. Then edit it, press enter and 'b' to boot with those options.

The fix I posted above should clear your problem up. That goes for any others having issues with the xf86-video-intel driver.

Re: Blank screen during boot

That didn't clear. I've had tried everything from that wiki and the googlings with no success. sad
Maybe it's about the firmware of my netbook. I have adapted to live with this. I can't see boot process messages, the rest is Ok.

Re: Blank screen during boot

I'm still having problems with the same issue.

I've a Thinkpad L520 (Intel HD3000)
and i'm running

Linux 3.2.5-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Feb 7 08:34:36 CET 2012 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2430M CPU @ 2.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

extra/intel-dri 7.11.2-1 [installed]
    Mesa DRI drivers for Intel
extra/xf86-video-intel 2.17.0-2 (xorg-drivers xorg) [installed]
    X.org Intel i810/i830/i915/945G/G965+ video drivers

have tried everything but unless i set nomodeset and load vesa i can't run Xorg on the internal Monitor
I'm using an external monitor which works fine but i would like to get my 2nd Monitor (laptopdisplay) back.

Any new ideas ?

thanks

I'm having a similar issue (see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=136043). Are you able to get it to work in 2.6.33.20?

Re: Blank screen during boot

I have the same problem - and after more use of google I found an acceptable solution
that works for me with linux 3.2.7-1-ARCH
(noacpi and noapic is not an soluton - because then USB will not work...)

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=708566

2. boot with video.brightness_switch_enabled=1 and while the black screen still
appears, the brightness controls function properly and you can use them to make
the screen visible.

Re: Blank screen during boot

I'm find a simple solution for acpi, noapic and video intel (KMS) problems.

I've a Lenovo Thinkpad L520 (Intel HD3000) with latest included BIOS: LENOVO 786035S/786035S, BIOS 8GET38WW (1.15 ) 11/04/2011
Linux myhost 3.0.23-1-lts #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Mar 1 12:00:00 CET 2012 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2520M CPU @ 2.50GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

1) Update all with pacman -Syu

2) Add linux-lts kernel package (3.0.23-1)

3) Insert new LABEL in /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg without any of this: noapic, acpi=off, nomodeset, i915.modeset=1 and i915.semaphores=1

        LABEL archlts
	MENU LABEL Arch LTS Linux
	LINUX ../vmlinuz-linux-lts
        APPEND root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ro
	INITRD ../initramfs-linux-lts.img

4) Change default entry in /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg

        DEFAULT archlts

5) Enjoy.

I've running xfce4 with all ACPI, USB and good video resolution 1366x768_60. best regards people

Re: Blank screen during boot

I am having this issue with ATI radeon drivers, both the proprietary ones and the opensource xf86-video-ati one.

Upgraded kernel to 3.3.0 through [testing]
booting with KMS produces a black screen - TV output display "Invalid Format"
booting with nomodeset/radeon.modeset=0 causes Xorg to not start -- "no screens found"
booting with radeon.modeset=1 does not work

had to remove [testing] and -Syuu down to 3.2.13

Any suggestions? This is causing a serious issue for me because HDMI audio is not supported for my card unless I'm running the 3.3 kernel.

Update -- this does not work with Catalyst drivers either.
