VLC framebuffer controls

Hi, I want to start using vlc in framebuffer mode, but there's a problem. I don't know how to enable controls (play, pause, stop, next, etc...). I am already using these shortcuts in ordinary vlc interface and they work just fine. infortunately it does not for my framebuffer. For example, I am unable to enable/disable subtitles...

PS: i am using Arch Linux, 2.6.32.9 and the latest build of VLC (tried the provided binary and compiled, no difference, even in speed)
