[SOLVED] pacman is not working!

Hey guys,

I'm trying to remove kdemod or any of the apps that were installed with it by using this command:

pacman -Rsu kdemod

Here's what happens next, i copied from my console:

Do you want to remove these packages? [Y/n] y
[root@rocketship ~]#

So right after I press "y" to remove the packages, nothing happens. The packages remain on the system. I want to remove these packages, then re-install Gnome so any packages that it might need are re-installed just in case. I've done this on other systems after deciding which Desktop Environment i liked better. But in this case, pacman is just not working!

I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Re: [SOLVED] pacman is not working!

What are you trying to achieve with "pacman -Rsu"?

Re: [SOLVED] pacman is not working!

I think you'll be better off if you leave out the -u option. I think pacman sees packages installed that need one of the packages in the list and just runs around in circles. I don't think it's a brilliant idea to use that option when you want to remove specific packages; I think it's more meant for orphans.

Re: [SOLVED] pacman is not working!

Hey loafer, I'm just trying to remove all those packages you see listed up there. It's not doing it though.

Hey .:B:. let me try that! (by the way, i believe i've always use -Rsu in the apst and have never had any problems)

Alright, so it's not working without the u option as well .:B:..

If i try the previous Rsu version again i get the same as the first example I showed.

Do you think it's poosible i have to re-install kdemod first then proceed to uninstall everything?

Re: [SOLVED] pacman is not working!

Read man pacman to familiarise yourself with all the remove options.  In short, "pacman -Rcs kdemod" is probably what you're lookingfor.

Re: [SOLVED] pacman is not working!

From what i read in the pacman manual, the -c option is recursive... So combined with the -c option, this means pacman will crawl along it's paths as far as it can go and delete whatever packages it can so long as they are not needed by any other packages, right? I'd prefer and answer before trying this! big_smile

Also, tavianator, from reading the pacman manual, -s and -u seem to be the safest bet to not remove other packages that other programs would need. I have read the manual. wink using the -c option on ly seems that it will look further than just the first layer of dependancies. What difference should this make in performance? Pacman should still be able to just delete the first layer of dependancies by not using the -c. If i'd prefer to dig further, then -c would be an option. There's no logical reason why -Rsu isn't working!

And how come it won't delete the packages even after it prompts me if I want to? That to me sounds like a bug! No one else has had this issue?

Re: [SOLVED] pacman is not working!

-Rsu didn't remove anything because everything got "removed from [the] target list."

I'm guessing that a lot of stuff is depending on qt(mod) through a few layers of dependencies.  If you don't want to get rid of all that stuff, I'd do "pacman -Rd qtmod qtmod-phonon" and "pacman -S qt".  Then "pacman -R kdemod-complete" might be all you need.

Re: [SOLVED] pacman is not working!

This is what I would do....

To get a list of kdemod-packages:   pacman -Qqs kdemod-
Then attempt to remove those packages:   pacman -Rs $(pacman -Qqs kdemod-)

That might result in some errors (other packages needing those as dependencies.   If you want to remove those packages as well:   pacman -Rsc $(pacman -Qqs kdemod-)

or perhaps safer...

pacman -Rs $(pacman -Qqs kdemod) pkg1 pkg2...

Re: [SOLVED] pacman is not working!

It won't delete the package because some other package in your system depends on the package you want to delete. Its saving your system from yourself.

Whether that's appropriate or not is debateable. You can of course force things with the -Rd option, but then you'd be left with a whole lot of packages which don't work and just take up space.

Re: [SOLVED] pacman is not working!

I don't think the -c is necessary, but wonder is right to suggest pacman -Rs kdemod-complete rather than pacman -Rs kdemod. There will also be some problems with qscintilla, qimageblitz and vlc needing a version of qt. You might be able to figure out some trickery involving -Rd qtmod followed by installing qt, though it's probably simplest to just uninstall those things then reinstall them after you've gotten rid of kdemod

Re: [SOLVED] pacman is not working!

Hmmmm, ok thanks for the info guys.

What i'm thinking mamillan is to try -Rs kdemod-complete like you suggested, then re-installing Gnome. I think it will install anything that might have been removed with kdemod. I did this successfully with no problems on my other system.

Aha! now i remember: i did try the kdemod-complete package! ...I'll post back the results!

Re: [SOLVED] pacman is not working!

Alright, i used "pacman -Rsu kdemod-complete" and it worked just fine!

So when you use pacman to uninstall something, make sure you use the exact name of the package you originally installed! wink
