Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

Probably the biggest reason to upgrade:

- Improved interaction with the udev filesystem.

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

Works perfectly! Much better than the previous release.  Now it works with my gforce MX 440 card.  With the improved udev support the module doesn't have to be loaded by hand. big_smile

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

Holy smokes...

It's a good thing I don't use glxgears to associate performance with my OpenGL stuff.  I don't use the Arch package, but my framerates in 'glxgears' just dropped 29%.  I used to get ~4600 FPS (6629) and now I get ~3200 (7167).  I might have to test this "theory" out on some Doom3 lovin'...

* That has nothing to do with this package, but I thought I'd share my experiences with this NVIDIA release nonetheless...

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

Everything appears to be OK.  It appears that permissions on /dev/nvidiactl were preventing me from running my OpenGL game project, but the NVIDIA readme FAQ said to chmod it, which solved that problem.

There was also a problem with the old JOGL libraries, but updating those to the newest ones solved any issues.

Thanks!

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

My framerates dropped as well.
I'm running this with a 2.6.11.2-ac2 kernel, and I'm not sure that it's really working 100%.
Oh btw, I have a custom package, i'm using -pkg1 instead of -pkg0 as the testing package uses.

I'd be grateful if anyone could throw me some ideas about how to make it all work again. (I notice missing effects in things like tuxracer...etc)

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

Nevermind about my prior post.  I needed to apply the 1 patch supplied by NVIDIA.  It corrects a few things for those of us that use the kernel AGPGART.

My framerates are exactly as they were with 6629.

Maybe another good reason for me to use the Arch package instead of making a foo' outta myself doing it on my own...

Sure thing my NVIDIA/Arch brother...

* Just use the single patch. It corrects both issues given by the 2 separate ones.

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

Hmm I'm wondering about something, perhaps one of you is more knowlegable about this.
If I were to use nvAGP, what would the big difference be between that and using the kernel's native AGP?

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

Nothing as far as I can tell.  I've tried both and neither experience a performance or stability gain.  The only reason to possibly use it is if you're having problems with AGPGART.  I'ver read several threads in the nvnews forums where people with certain chipsets seemed to need it.

My glxgears framerate dropped, too; DooM3 is pretty much the same (a bit higher, even). I run a GFFX 5800.

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

nggalai, when I applied the patch, my 'glxgears' actually remained the same.  I was in error before, since I originally didn't use the patch.  If you use tpowa's mighty fine Arch package, you don't have to worry about this.

I tried out several OpenGL games, and it actually runs a lot smoother it seems.  By the way, I'm still using kernel 2.6.10.

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

skoal,

na, I actually use the NV binaries, not the packages. Hence the observation. I'll try out the patched version, too--who knows? Perhaps DooM3 will run even faster. big_smile

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

I had some serious udev problems last week because of upgrading nvidia, it messed up permissions horribly. I had to go back to an older version of udev, ill have to give this a try and see if it fixes it.

Oh well, looks like I'll be using 6111-jp3 and 2.6.10 for quite some time.

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

I also had the /dev/nvidiactl permissions error message.  Did the chmod/chown thing, but I'm also running PAM so I get the error back after rebooting.

I checked for the two permissions files they mentioned, but I don't seem to have them, although I do have an /etc/security/ directory, but none of the files in there have a <dri> section.

Anyone know what I need to change to fix this without disabling PAM?

If you not have video, edit your /etc/group file

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

I'm getting pretty much the exact same fps in glxgears over here running a FX 5700LE. Doom 3 seems to have picked up ~3-5 fps on average but Neverwinter Nights is the same. I'll try UT2004 later and see what, if anything has changed. Overall a pretty good driver release, I'd say. Is anyone using the NvAGP instead of kernel agpgart? If so, how does it compare?

I have some problem with this driver.
On my TVOUT screen is monochrome. With previous nvidia driver everything was OK.
