Program against multiple versions of a program/library parallelly?

Here is my problem in a nutshell:
I wan't primarily to use a stable version of a library/program. But still I need a second version of the same program to check if things are working resp. modify a few things in the library/program to create patches.

a more specific version:
I have an xmms2 client using python bindings. But I need to modify a few things in the xmms source to extend the python bindings with some functionality. So ideally I need two versions of xmms2... the official one, and the one I'm experimenting with.

I thought of using VirtualBox to create a second installation, but that would mainly just be waste of time and resources...
How do you guys deal with this kind of stuff? I'm sure a few developers are faced with this problem... (I mean generally, not just the specific version)
