Hrm, this is too great of a project to just let it wither and die. I'll poke about your source and reread through the concepts over the weekend and see if I will be able to make a good fork of this project.

It won't die, because I use it on a daily basis. If openbox will be changed due to some reasons then I'll implement necessary changes in bmpanel2, etc. The problem is that I like bmpanel2 as it is and I don't really wish to improve it further more, simply because I think it's good enough for me and probably for a lot of people too. There are however a bit of room for other WM compatibility improvements and maybe few new features.. But not really an area my interest, because no one pays me for that work and it gives me no other kind of satisfaction (altruism, etc).
Forks are good because they actually show me how much other person is ready to work on the project.. It's like real work versus fuzzy words. So.. can't wait to see what you will do if you really want to of course. Often people don't know what they want (and that's ok, we're all sort of the same).

I just wanted to pop in here and say thanks to nsf for this excellent piece of software. Its the only panel that I could find that suits my needs: application launcher (allows me to make a start menu sort of thing with xdotool, bmpanel2 only though), and themes that use image files as opposed to hex codes (good for if you want a gradient).

Did anyone make progress or could anyone work out how to put bmpanel2 on the side of the screen and not just top or bottom?
I used bmpanel some time ago and liked it for all the same reasons as everyone else. I changed to tint2 though for a long time because I like how tint2 can be placed on the left of the screen - using a wide screen monitor/laptop it is certainly nice to have the panel on the side not the bottom.
