Google Earth on Arch vs. Google Earth on Ubuntu

Hello.

I have Arch as my primary system, but keep also Ubuntu, because I install this to my friends.
I am having serious troubles with Google Earth. First, it does not work properly when Compiz is used. This is a well known problem all around the forum. But even when I turn off Compiz, I still get a lot of crashes (like every 5 minutes) and artifact while browsing globe. In Ubuntu, there is this problem non existent. It works fine with Compiz and does not crash on me. I use Gnome on Arch. About info of Google Earth shows only minor version difference and kernel difference. Arch = 2.6.32, Ubuntu = 2.6.31
What is the problem? Did Ubuntu team somehow hacked this to work? Can we fix it too?

I am willing to provide additional info if needed.

Re: Google Earth on Arch vs. Google Earth on Ubuntu

What graphics card are you using? And are you using proprietary or open drivers? Could you post the output of lspci please?

Please be patient, I'm a n00b on Arch (only 2 years on Ubuntu) so I may say something stupid!

Re: Google Earth on Arch vs. Google Earth on Ubuntu

And on Ubuntu do you use the open or flgrx drivers? Just reproduced the problem and I use the open drivers. When I tried it on Ubuntu I used the closed drivers and it worked fine, so I'm wondering if that's the reason for your problems with compiz + GE. I would suggest that GE probably makes a lot of GL calls that are perhaps still problematic with the open drivers which is why it's unstable even with Compiz off (no better with KWin with effects either).
Actually just spotted something.. ATI X1300.. does FLGRX support that anymore?
Regarding whether ubuntu hacked something, maybe it's an idea to get the deb file, extract it and use the files contained within on your Arch install.
Apologies for not-terribly-helpful post.. I think I may be in over my head a little so I'll duck out and see if someone more experienced can come up with something better.

Re: Google Earth on Arch vs. Google Earth on Ubuntu

Incidentally, just doing a test in fluxbox right now, performance is absolutely fine, but it may be related to my using 2.6.33-rt-ice kernel.

Re: Google Earth on Arch vs. Google Earth on Ubuntu

Try removing google-earth's qt libs, to use your system's:

cd ~/google-earth  # Or wherever you installed it
mkdir qt-libs-old
mv libQt* qt-libs-old/

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have no problem with fonts, nor do I have Qt libs in my google-earth installation.

Re: Google Earth on Arch vs. Google Earth on Ubuntu

my google earth works fine, but i'm using nvidia-173xx, so maybe its related to a driver issue for you.

Re: Google Earth on Arch vs. Google Earth on Ubuntu

Even mine works fine with proprietary nvidia drivers and compiz (both on or off). And it's seamlessly impossible to hack google earth since it's not open source so the installer merely copies already compiled files. I would bet one of my ball that it's a matter of open/proprietary drivers ;-)

PS: just joking about my ball!!

Re: Google Earth on Arch vs. Google Earth on Ubuntu

I was also thinking that it would be somehow connected to drivers/xorg/mesa stack. Could it be KMS? I think it is enabled in Ubuntu by default now.

Re: Google Earth on Arch vs. Google Earth on Ubuntu

KMS isn't enabled by default til Lucid. Karmic certainly doesn't use it.

Ubuntu 9.10 does indeed have KMS enabled.

I'm using ATI free radeon driver. Installing lib32-ati-dri completly solved on arch x64 for me. Using

from multilib: lib32-ati-dri 7.8.2-5

from aur: bin32-google-earth 5.2.1.1588-3
