How to enable event sounds in GNOME??

I have installed the gnome-audio package,and then Preference->Sound->
General->Enabale sound server starup ,sounds for event.
also ssystem bell->sound a audioble are secleted.

I play the sounds for test,but no sound heard.

how can  I get the event sounds work??  :?:
