The only thing more stupid than using gtk1 is using that as a reason to bitch about a piece of software.

Is there any security in mpd?  Such as acls or encrypted tunnels/SSL...

umm.... why would you need that?

it can be configured so only so many connections can be made to it, and by default it is only accessible from localhost.

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

You could configure MPD to drop root privileges and run it as an unprivileged user.

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

Anyone else notice that MPD plays songs a little bit too fast?   I've tried it on a range of mp3's and they all sound a tad bit chipmunkish.

I timed a song that is supposed to be 4:07 and it was done in 3:47.  Which means it played roughly 10% too fast.

Other than that, its great.  Now I can setup my multimedia buttons to work.  sweet.

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

for me it only fails at certain mp3 files, propably malformed files, but rhythmbox played them well. but it's only the minority of my files, so I can live with it.

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

I have almost two months worth of mp3s/oggs and mpd doesn't really like that many files (I tried gmpc, glurp, ncmpc, mpc)...cmus handles them best, so I'll stick with that, I guess...

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

Dammit, I was using XMMS and I was pretty happy with it. Even though it takes quite a while to add all of my music to the playlist.

If there's an AudioScrobbler plugin for it, I'll give this much praised program a try.

pffft, tell that to my ONE MILLION MP3Z all organized properly into their categories: techno, euro-techno, dance, and muzak.

I'm looking for a solution to the local use AND remote-at-work use so I don't need to replicate my collection.  The SSL/TLS stuff would prevent tunes in the clear over the internet.

I'm in love with amaroK on my workstation, since it's pretty damn nice and really sweet (it has some issues with speed and stuff, tho sad )

othervise, I'm really fond of my mpd (the only problem atm is audioscrobbler+mpd != true)

You'd need to setup nfs or something to do that with just mpd. MPD can't stream files over the internet. The best option would be to set up a audio streaming server like gnump3 or that other one that starts with a J.

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

Iphitus: I haven't used XMMS for quite a while, thank you. I have been using BMP for some time... It doesn't have as many plugins available for it as XMMS, yes, but I don't really need the plugins.

And I know that the use of GTK1 is not a serious problem... It just looks rather ugly. Sorry if my complaining has bothered you.

(I need to learn how to make GTK themes... That would solve some of the little problems that have been vexing me.)

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

ok, I'm possibly stupid... when mpd starts fine, but I can't connect to it... am I required to have music in the music dir to do anything (I was planning on starting it empty and then filling it up once it's running)

I guess you noticed the message after pacman -Sy mpd, yes?
==> mpd: CREATE AN /etc/mpd.conf BEFORE RUNNING (EXAMPLE: /etc/mpd.conf.example)

that was done... if it wasn't done, mpd wouldn't start... and I stated it starts fine, yes?

you need to create the music db:

/etc/rc.d/mpd create-db

and if you add or remove files from the music dir, you have to do

/etc/rc.d/mpd update-db

The impossible missions are the only ones which succeed.
