[SOLVED] No control in mplayer

I have setup a mythtv frontend with Arch on it.  I did not install a DE, instead opting for the .xintrc method of booting into mythfrontend.  Everything is working in mythtv, but when I launch mplayer I cannot control it.  I have it setup as my primary player for videos.  The videos play fine but I can't control anything with either the keyboard or my remote.  I had installed the standard mplayer out of the repo

pacman -S mplayer

Update - After much googlin', I am coming to the idea that mplayer is not obtaining focus when it is launched, which explains why no inputs work.  This seems  to be a problem with systems lacking DE, or running very minimal ones.  Does anyone know anyway I can force focus onto mplayer when it is launched?

I suggest dwm. Alt-b hides the toolbar = fullscreen mplayer.

Or you could just remote control mplayer using FIFOS.
