currently, I use xine do to the much better UI
when the official gtk2 switch happens, I may convert.... but I'm satisfied with xine right now
I'd use xine, but...
The problem are the frontends. I'd like to have a gtk2 frontend, however unfortunately gxine is unmaintained and totem depends on gnome.
Default xine-ui is plain ugly!

I like the xine-ui... use the skin downloader and grab the one with the black background....
and hey, at least it looks batter than gmplayer's menus (I don't use the controls, I use the right-click menus for all interaction... this is why I like xine much better

xine-ui skjins are fine, but you still have this ugly xine-ui menus...

Hmm... Mplayer still sucks even after it's gtk2... I don't really like xine-ui either... totem is nice.. but look at this:
Targets: hal-0.2.97-2 libgsf-1.9.1-1 gnome-desktop-2.8.0-1 nautilus-2.8.1-1
nautilus-cd-burner-2.8.1-1 libdvdcss-1.2.8-1 libdvdread-0.9.4-2
libdvdnav-0.1.9-2 faac-1.24-1 faad2-2.0-5 hermes-1.3.3-1
libmikmod-3.1.11-1 gtk-1.2.10-4 mjpegtools-1.6.2-1 gst-plugins-0.8.5-1
totem-0.99.19-2
Total Package Size: 11.5 MB
Bah.... GXine would be nice if it was actually maintained... I guess they all suck, but the least sucky is gmplayer. Too bad amarok doesn't support video!

Maybe gstreamer is going to be a solution.
However, I'm afraid they will go in a direction of being dependant on gnome (right now gstreamer doesn't support everything without gnome; arch package depends on gnome .

Oh god, not 11MB! What are you running, a 3GB hard drive?

Maybe he's got one of those trusty old 300MB ones. (Hey, mine still works!)

xine is good but its look is very ugly, however mplayer is good and has a very nice look!
IMHO, i prefer mplayer against gtk1

It may not apply to you, but some people (including me) don't want to have junk on their harddrive no matter how less space it takes. I don't want gnome parts to lay around. Please, do not impose on anybody installing this 11MB.
Btw seems KDE has nice frontend to mplayer (KMPlayer). This is why I requested (in mplayer gtk2 thread) to split gmplayer to other package - I don't want to have junk I never use.

One thing I don't like about xine: I takes HUGE amounts of memory.
I typed "grep Data /proc/`pidof xine`/status" and got 160868 kB.
I typed "grep Data /proc/`pidof gmplayer`/status" and got 7380 kB.

...Too bad amarok doesn't support video!...
there is a feature request for amarok to use mplayer as backend i posted to http://bugs.kde.org/
unfortunately, the http://bugs.kde.org/ is down now (Too many connections at globals.pl line 140.), so i cannot give you the link :-(
also the authors of amarok do not seem to like the idea to add video playing to amarok :-(

Seems like kaffeine is going to be my favourite media player...
It uses xine-lib and kde.

I cant for the life of me get this package to build...
does the pkgbuild need to be updated?

What error do you get?
EDIT: Maybe the error is in the cut and paste. Two lines are wrapped:
1. the source line
2. the line that starts with mv $startdir/src/fonts ...

Snowman, why don't you provide a mplayer-gtk2 pkg until arch does it?

I wrote a frontend for mplayer a while back, there was some nasty memoryleaks in it but I think it should be allright now, It's running mplayer in slavemode like mplayer-plugin so it's written in pure Python,
pkgname=lazy-player
pkgver=0.1
pkgrel=1
pkgdesc="A simple PyGTK frontend for mplayer."
url=""
depends=("pygtk" "mplayer")
source=("http://xerxes2.1go.dk/lazy-player-0.1.tar.gz")
md5sums=("63c4411e8fd5920f34ce87b573f82b81")
build() {
cd $startdir/src/$pkgname-$pkgver
mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/usr/bin
mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/lazy_player
mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/usr/share/lazy-player
install -m 755 lazy-player $startdir/pkg/usr/bin
install -m 755 settings.py $startdir/pkg/usr/share/lazy-player
