you need to create the music db:
/etc/rc.d/mpd create-db
and if you add or remove files from the music dir, you have to do
/etc/rc.d/mpd update-db
ah thats probably it... thanks!

just a little question, did you ran just mpd or did you used all the time /etc/rc.d/mpd to start the daemon?
because all error messages are suppressed when using the rc.d script, but for me mpd told me at the first run, to create some directories.
so I would reccomend just to call mpd and look for any messages.

yeah, I installed, copied the conf file... made some user/directory changes, then ran /etc/rc.d/mpd start
it didn't fail, and ps aux displayed it as running, but I couldn't connect with any clients... it was odd.
Another question:
I feel odd putting my username into the conf file, considering it's run at boot time and (although this isn't the case) any user on the system can connect to a process running as me.
Does anyone here use a dedicated mpd user? I did that as well, and set the music dir to /home/mpd/music. I made sure mpd was in the users and audio group, too... could this be an issue? Can userX connect to mpd that was run as userY?

yes. i run mpd at boottime as daemon (root) and connect to it as normal user to start the music
note: if you start the daemon, the music does not start. you have to populate the playlist and start the music
e.g. use ncmpc, press [3], select directories you want to add to playlist with [space], press [2], press [enter] on a song to start it. to enable repeat and random, press [z] respectively [r]. once the music started, you can press [q] and quit ncmpc. the daemon will keep playing the playlist in the mode you specified in ncmpc or any other client
did you run /etc/rc.d/mpd create-db? did it finish successfully? check /var/log/mpd.db-creation for output
The impossible missions are the only ones which succeed.

well, I haven't tried yet, so I'm speculating....
last I tried ncmpc, it just flat out failed with "unable to connect" - it's probably because I didn't create the DB, but I just wanted to cover all bases

Whoa. This is nifty.... I'm hooked. I like BMP, but this is just sweet.
Wait a second... where's mpdcast.com? I wonder if it scales decently.....

Could you guys check how many processes are launched by starting mpd daemon?
I my case there are 3
'/usr/bin/mpd /etc/mpd.conf'
..running with root privileges.
Offline
3 Processes is normal.
To make it not run as a root, edit your /etc/mpd.conf, go to the user line under security and set it to run as your user or another one.

Thanks. That's what I was looking for. Running as root is not good at all.

I have installed mpd, modded the mpd.conf file, however, when I try to create the db as a user I get the following message:
/etc/rc.d/mpd: line 38: /var/log/mpd.db-creation: Permission denied
Any thoughts.

the user doesn't have write permissions to /var/log - do it as root or change the location

Guys I can't find this package... what exactly is the AUR address for sticking in my pacman.conf?
I have
[community]
Server = ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/community/os/i686/
that's right, no? Has moreamp (or do any other packages) go straight into the AUR when submitted? Or does it take a while?
Offline
Eh? MPD is in extra afaik.
