It's not possible what you have done ... If it's installed, /etc/rc.d/hal must exist.

If you haven't already, put hal in the DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf. Put it at the beginning somewhere. On my system, it's the second one in the list after syslog-ng:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng hal network net-profiles !netfs @crond avahi-daemon @cups @sshd @privoxy @irqbalance alsa @mpd @openntpd)Personally, I'd not install fam and use gamin. gamin covers most of the functionality of hal and does not need to be started explicitly, which is to say, it doesn't not need to be started by you or put in the DAEMONS array.

Unless, of course, ect is used instead of etc.

This is boggling my mind. It must be a typing error, or you just totally screwed up pacman.
On the plus side: Welcome to Arch ![]()

You need to start Xorg before gnome.
Add gnome-session to your .xinitrc file in your home directory
Then run startx
EDIT: Or you didn't configure your video card properly

Alternatively, install gdm and put that last in the DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf.

I have an intel card, so I can't really help there.
Check this out and see if it might be of use:

We need to slow way down here...
MiNd-FuCk, all of the basic set up stuff is covered in the Beginner's Guide. You shouldn't need to be branching out into the wiki's sub-articles for getting a system to the point of running Gnome, unless nvidia-xconfig isn't covered there (I don't know off of the top of my head). Take a bit of time, go back through it, and see what you have missed.
--EDIT--
It's all there. Please go through the Beginner's Guide. It will get you up and running.

Basically, what skottish just said. I didn't know how to word it where it wouldn't be offensive. The beginners guide is a great resource for setting up a system.
