After struggling with my video a bit, I decided to put my 21" CRT Dell D1626HT monitor on the DVI output of my nVidia GeForce 7300 SE/7200 GS card (with an adapter) as opposed to connecting to the standard 15-pin connector.
Nvidia autodetects the monitor just fine with that option, and saves me a lot of headaches with proper metamodes and such, as well as a nice mouse config.
I edited my existing xorg.conf by letting the nvidia app show me the suggested xorg.conf file (started as regular user) and in another window I have the actual xorg.conf file openen as root in gedit. Simply highlight the areas from the suggested xorg.conf and copy/paste into the gedit window. Save, restart X or reboot, and done.
Thought I'd share that.
