Fellow Archers,
I recently installed Arch Linux on a Dell XPS Studio 1340 and Im having a lot of trouble configuring my multimedia keys. They are recognized by the kernel and even xev acknoledges my inputs:
122 XF86AudioLowerVolume
174 XF86AudioStop
173 XF86AudioPrev
173 XF86AudioPrev
Problem is: all the keys do nothing except for the 174 XF86AudioStop wich behaves very madly, lowering the volume instead. I checked in alsamixer and indeed the master value is reduced. I tried creating a .Xmodmap and I get the same results.
Can anyone shed any light at all? I'm baffled. Maybe it is some sort of conflict between configurations? I'm using kde4 (from kdemod) and hal is handling inputs.
Thank you all.

mroaes,
the interpretation and possible actions of your inputs depends on the DE/WM you are using.
Most DE/WM have a config file for that, some even have some kind of graphical front end to assign actions to codes.

PS: I now see you are using kde4. I just use a WM, icewm. Perhaps a kde4 user can help you, but I believe it is somewhere
om kde's systemsetup.

Check the shortcuts or keys configuration in KDE. I not found a similar issue in Gnome, but i think is a problem with the configuration of KDE.

Ok, I've taken a look at 'System Settings -> Input actions' and there is nothing in there that relates to multimedia keys. The only actions configured are the default Konqueror gestures and printscreen. Is that a problem? Should I set the inputs there? Should the config from .Xmodmap not supercede any KDE configuration? If not, how should I configure calls like 'XF86AudioStop', etc. that are software independent in the KDE input mapper?
Sorry about all those questions, btw.

Take a look at systemsettings > keyboard & mouse > global keyboard shortcuts. there you can choose "kmix" as kde component.
It's a bug planet!

Thank you, karoshi!
Using kmix to control the volume keys did the trick!
