Why does no compositing cause rendering glitches?

This is not Linux specific; at least in my experience. Vista/Win7 without Aero causes tearing. Although, I don't think Xp has the issue. Linux also seems to suffer by this. Having compiz (or kde's version) off causes the same issues.

The normal tearing when moving windows and such doesn't much bother me. What does bother me is that video and flash tear all too often without compiz. And on top of that, when alternating between apps or resizing, there's noticeable glitching between repaints.

This really irks me because compiz is really sluggish on KDE (its version) and also on gnome with apps like firefox.

Is there anyway to get the smooth rendering without using compiz?
