idea:
pacman -S gnome-desktop
pacman -S kde-destop
this will download the [whole] of the gnome (and/or) kde desktop, including the dependencies. In that way one can upgrade to gnome or kde with one single command.
apt-get install arch

dam fine idea...I second the motion!
especially since kde 3.1 is just around the corner....
anyway to make it retroactive so you could use it to remove all of your previous kde with one command? (or does it do that already, I haven't had to do it yet...)

Adding (and removing) groups of packages will be possible soon. We're calling them "symbolic packages" and they are essentially fake packages that can point to groups of other packages.

I just love it when I re-invent the wheel

If other people have the same idea, that just means it's probably a good one.

The idea is an old one actually. in debian they call(ed) them task packages. But to using gnome-desktop i don't think will fly as one of the gnome packages is indeed gnome-desktop if i am not mistaken. I would be much easier for us crappy typers to have it dumbed down even more to just "kde" and "gnome".

on the other hand (guess it'll be the right hand for me)
do you want all the gnome / kde packages ?
I don't need kdepim for example
I don't want kdepim
apt-get install arch

there should be 2 types of it somthing like 'gnome-full', 'gnome-basic'.
oh and 'pacman -Sy gnome-desktop' didn't install gnome-session.

kinda seems that provided an app included in "dummy" package
was not dependant on the core (i.e. gaim)
one should be able to remove them individually
so point being
if a sym-pac for gnome-et-al / kde-et-al
allowed me to remove what i dont wont
it be reasonable and very likeable at that.
