I get the following error when attempting to upgrade ncurses:

Thanks. From the link you posted, I eventually found a response by Judd:
You can ignore the "error while loading shared libraries" error during the upgrade though. It is not fatal and only occurs when readline or ncurses is updated.

why does everyone complain about this message when there are no problems? next big program I make, I'm gonna make sure it randomly outputs "fatal error while attempting to access ftp" for no reason and see if i get a similar response...

Error messages and warnings are a sufficiently rare occurence under Arch Linux that anybody can take alarm...
