Hey everyone. I am migrating from ubuntu karmic. I've been using linux for about 1year. But I have been googleing (????) forever. I have fumbled my way through the arch install and getting the de up and running. Loving every minute of it. Right know I'm working on cups and samba shares over home network. Later who knows. I am so glad to have found this distro and took the challenge. LXDE is a perfect environment for my tired laptop. Thanks and keep up the great work everyone.

Hey,
I am migrating from ubuntu karmic / lucid becaus i will have my own system with my own decisions to make. No one who's tell me what i have to like. And well, need for speed.. First of all i build a few VM's, today my Laptop, next week my desktop and i think, when i am familar with Arch, finally my server. After i'am not agreeing with debian and ubuntu sometimes, i at few other distros and finally the decision was between Arch and Sabayon/Gentoo. Then i make a final installation to see what fit me best and this was Arch.
Thanks for the great work.

Hello all! This is my third day on Archlinux. I've switched from ubuntu jaunty. So far I like this system very much, it's exactly the same as i thought it would be: Simple, Fast, Individually configured, with high system control, and zero bloatness (the reason I switched to this masterpiece)!
I've already been in an irc channel (#archlinux @ FreeNode), so some may recognize me. ( )
I'm using an nx6310 (ey588es) Compaq laptop, and thinking of contributing my setup notes to the wiki. Someone may find it useful. (I've found out that there already is an nx6310 tread at wiki, but it's not for exactly the same model, so, some things differ).
Thanks for this wonderfull distribution, guys.
Cheers from Croatia.

H'llo everybody. I've come from some years using Slackware, which was is the only system I stayed with. In fact it was the first Linux system I ever succesfully installed. Sometime ago I heard of Arch, but it was really these forums which awoke my interest in Arch: Arch users seem to be doing the things I want to do, so whenever I googled about something, I often found the answer here.
I use Ratpoison and all the stuff that fits in with that scenario (dmenu etc.).
I'm posting this message in order to apologise in advance for the problems which I shall be posting here as an arch novice.
My first task is to configure Arch so that it is nearly identical to the way I have everything set up in my Slackware partition - then I'll feel "at home" and can then start rocking and rolling ;-))

Hello there.
I discovered Arch about a year ago, but back then it all just seemd too scary to try out. I was using Xubuntu, which was the first Linux distribution I ever installed. I actually used Linux for the first time in my life as late as 2008, at school. I had considered Linux too imposible to try, but after seeing it in action at school, I decided to give it a try. And here I am now.
I would say I have learned Linux extremely fast, I don't have any problems using terminal applications and manually configuring stuff: it's the way it's meant to be anyway.
My main reason for dumping Xubuntu was that when I tried to google for a solution to some problem, I would keep running into dozens of these super noobish "how do I change my wallpaper"-threads (RTFM!), which annoyed me extremely much. Now, with Arch, whenever I google, the first or second link generally contains a solution to my problem, which is Awesome with a capital A. The Wiki is also epic ownage.
I mainly use my computer for communication (IRC, forums, messenger, etc.), school stuff (I study IT, which includes a bunch of programming), and music (listening, composing, recording). I use XFCE4 and Compiz+Emerald, which make my GUI look beautiful, and it still consumes less than 300mb of RAM, as opposed to 700mb in Xubuntu with the same setup.
Huge thanks to the developers of Arch Linux! I hope I'll be able to contribute someday

Hello everyone. I'm an Arch Newbie. Been using Arch for two days now and it's very impressive and simple. I don't see myself ever going back to ubuntu after this experience.

Hello everybody,
I'm a Slackware user, and work as a Windows (2003/2008), Linux (mainly Redhat Enterprise), and Solaris systems administrator. I've been fooling around with Arch for a week or two, and so far I've been very pleasantly surprised. The way this distro is portrayed by some people (as in reviews on Distrowatch) is overy difficult or prone to break. I've had no issues as of yet.
Due to Slackware's lack of multilib and repositories I *had* been waiting on Debian 6.0, but I figured in the mean time that I'd experiment with a couple of other distros. I'm going to wait for another week or two before I do a bare-metal install on my main drives, but I think I've found a new home. I *do* run Windows under VMWare and the occasional game under CrossOver, but not very often.
To those of you who are making the transition to Arch from other so-called "user friendly" distros: Arch reminds me a lot of Slackware in terms of the "under the hood" mentality. There's a lot to learn here, and it will serve you well in the long term. The Arch wiki is great!

Hello everyone.
I've been using Linux on my desktop for over 2 years. Having been a long-lasting Windows user, I began messing around with Debian on an antique 300MHz Pentium II laptop bought on a fly market I quickly discovered lightweight Arch be a better solution for that poor machine. I got used to it, and since having got a new desktop PC, I'm using Arch Linux exclusively. I really like pacman and the way Arch is configured. I also find the forum and wiki really useful.

Hello!
I'm Igor. Now I'm discovering Arch on my desktop (cuople of days) and having #!CrunchBang on laptop for almost a year. In my case that mean I choose OpenBox as my DE/WM. I'm aware of ArchBang and Will & Shy & company effort and tracking changes&improvements on that project too.
I like rolling release and "Make/Finish Yourself an OS" approach. On the other hand, I have small issues with couple of programs (Gwibber, Osmo, Gnote) but looking forward to solve this out.
My first instalations (it is a repetitive process for me ) was discouraging, and WillXtreme's blog and Arch Wiki helped me a lot. Sure, now I'm use thegreenblob's modified installation script and planing to make installing and post-installing scripts for Arch.
After few attempts, I finally had a desktop in front of me. Now I'm testing all the apps I use in #!CrunchBang and simply discovering Arch.
OK, thats it. I hope we could help each other and have some fun all the way..
Regards!

Hello there!
Returning to Linux after about ten years (really). Tried xubuntu and some other distros, but it was too "hard" stuff for me. Arch is really what i want.

Hi,
I'm from Germany and currently studying computer science. I have been using Linux for three years straight, my experience with it is therefore quite advanced. I like to fiddle with different distributions or live CDs, especially Debian based ones. Since the beginning, I have been using Ubuntu but I am considering to put Arch on my main machine mostly because of the rolling release principle and "untouched" software. Currently, I am operating Arch in VirtualBox trying to customize an Arch live CD to my likes.
The first time I tried Arch, I could not even get a desktop environment running but after two more tries, I have it almost on par with Ubuntu. Now, that I have gathered a little experience with Arch, I will do my best to help out newcomers to get familar and solve their problems. I hope for a peaceful athmosphere.

HELLO TO EVERYONE. I'm new here, I'm glad to be part of this forum.

This is my hello post to this "Hello Thread" lol
I've been using ArchLinux on my laptop for about 4 months now, and enjoying every second I use it. I've used Ubuntu since 5.10 was released, and that was my first taste of Linux. I started using Arch because I needed a lightweight distro for my laptop (1.8 GHz, 256 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD), that I wouldn't do funky things to it. Sure, I could have kept Windows XP on it, but I'm tryin' to leave Windows. I used Xubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 on the laptop when I aquired it, but it made the screen go 8-bit color on me, and looked ugly unless I had a monitor hooked up to it. I tried Puppy Linux, I liked it, but after a while it got on my nerves as to how SIMPLE it was. I tried DSL, but DSL isn't very wireless friendly that I could figure out. Then I had decided to try Arch. Heh, let me tell you, I downloaded Arch, burnt it on disc, and installed it, expected to have a GUI waiting for me, but...I got greeted with the terminal. I had no idea what to do. But, thankfully, I had remembered I saw a wiki page for Arch. I became really good friend with the wiki that day. 7 hours of tryin' to figure out what to do and reading the wiki page, I had finally got myself set up. So, now 4 months down the road, I sit here and am thinking of putting Arch on my computer when I get it rebuilt.
Ok, that was a bit of a story.

Hello
I've been shuffling between some distros this few years (ubuntu, slackware, kubuntu, then back to ubuntu again ) when in slackware i'm having dependencies nightmare, spending nights to get virtual box,etc running perfectly.
then i got tired and back to *buntu family this time kubuntu (yeah i'm a very lazy guy) then i met some nasty bugs then back to ubuntu again. but using ubuntu i'm not very happy there is so many things laying around that i don't think it's needed to run for my needs then i stumble on some forums which discuss Archlinux and it seems a good distro i think i'll try it this week, so i wish i found my linux soulmate this time
