ASUS N61JQ install - to whom it may concern

I got this laptop (ASUS N61JQ-JX001V) which has:

Graphic: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
Ethernet Controller: Atheros AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
Wireless: Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Interface

I always have had computers with Nvidia, didn't think ATI would be a big deal, my bad.
I went into a long safari on the forums, with 64-page threads and worse.

To make a long story short, I ended up with the catalyst-test 10.4-444:

http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=34773

Open drivers where a no no go.

My xorg.conf:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "X.org Configured"
    Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
    InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
    InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

Section "Files"

    ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/misc"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/TTF"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1"
EndSection

Section "Module"
    Load "extmod"
    Load "dbe"
    Load "xtrap"
    Load "record"
    Load "dri"
    Load "glx"
    Load "GLcore"
    Load "freetype"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"

    Driver "kbd"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Mouse0"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "auto"
    Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
    ModelName "Monitor Model"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Card0"
    Driver "fglrx"
    VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc"
    BoardName "Radeon HD5650"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Card0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"

        Depth 24
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
EndSection

And for it to work, I had to put the fglrx driver in the MODULES line of rc.conf.

During installation the wireless interface was recognized, but the gigabit Ethernet controller was another
very very strange story.

Since I was installing from the net with a not working wired connection I had to configure wireless:

Modified /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf in my case i deleted all example configurations except the first one
and changed the ssid and psk to that of my WLAN.

ifconfig wlan0 up # Start the Wlan interface

Logged in to another tty (Alt + F2) and start the wpa_supplicant.

wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -d

Go back to tty1 and dhcpd the wlan interface

dhcpcd wlan0

When ARCH was installed, starting Atheros AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller was not only a no go, it would
make the hardware disappear even if I started another OS. This is mentioned in several posts in the ARCH forums.

Only way for the hardware to reappear: switch off, take the battery out. Oh boy.

Since here and there I had read that Ubuntu was able to install graphic and eth out of the box, I installed it to find
out what they were doing.

Making it short: I followed the instructions in

http://tinyurl.com/yevtoaj

In the MODULES line of rc.conf, I blacklisted atl1c and loaded atl1e.

From some symptoms and from what I got from our and other forums, the ATI will probably break down when
there will be an xorg and/or kernel upgrade.

It is my bad that I didn't inform myself before coming into this brand.

The Ethernet driver seems stable, should however install smoothly, not with tricks.
