Mutter is slow; possibly driver related?

I recently acquired a ThinkPad R400; it is equipped with an ATI  Radeon HD 3470. I then installed the (compositing) window manager Mutter (before my ThinkPad I used to use an eeepc 901, on which Mutter was to slow to be useable, and I really hoped that I can use it on a more powerful machine) only to notice the same sluggishness I always expierenced when using Mutter. I am using the xf86-video-ati driver. Consulting glxinfo yields:

and running glxgears says something like:

1525 frames in 5.0 seconds = 304.888 FPS
1558 frames in 5.0 seconds = 311.463 FPS

any ideas? I my machine just too slow, is Mutter too slow?

i say that clutter and mutter are not optimized yet for speed.

I do know that Clutter is currently very slow with the vertical blank option enabled on open source X.org drivers.
Try with "export CLUTTER_VBLANK=none" and see if that helps to speed up Mutter too.

mh, no, that didn't help sad
however, I noticed that Mutter ouputs this:

Window manager warning: Log level 16: NOTE: Not using GLX TFP!

Any ideas?

so, I just tried Catalyst which seem to run much faster (glxgears something like 5000 FPS). I assume that xf86-video-ati has not been used properly and it has fallen back to some standard driver (?) -- if that is the case, can this somehow be fixed? -- I really want to use a free driver... and besides that, with Mutter now working, I still have some problems: some actions are really slow, like resizing a window, and I also have some strange glitches where the contents of a window are kind of rotated and stretched sad
