Yup, my new Dell 22" wide screen LCD has built in web cam lens staring at me all day and I would like to use Skype to do web video conferences of the web. I would like to know how can I see if Arch Linux recognizes my web camera? I don't have any applications yet installed on my Linux box that would utilize the web camera but I am asking how I should check to see what I need to do and check if my system recognizes the web cam on my LCD.
Thanks for any info!

Would it not be easiest just to run Skype and see if it has already detected the webcam?

Somewhere in the settings there's a button that says "Test Video" or something like that. It probably already works.

First of all test it with kamoso, cheese, kopete or any other application using camera to see if it's working correctly.
If you have 64-bit you would have to link some libraries to Skype to make it work.

VLC can also read from a webcam. You just go to "Media -> Video Capture Device" and input the name of the device. Should be something like "/dev/video0" or something.
I know in my case, udev had automatically loaded the proper driver for the webcam and everything, so it worked out of the box ![]()
