Firefox in WinXP vs. in Linux

I'm running archlinux exclusively at home. Firefox takes ages to start even though my home comp is newer than the comparison machine running XP.

I checked out the memory consumption in each machine. At home firefox in Linux takes about 75MB. At work running FF in XP takes ca. 36MB.

What takes?

Re: Firefox in WinXP vs. in Linux

That is really weird... In my experience, Firefox has memory leak problems on Windows but not on Linux. And on my machine (2.66 GHz Celeron D, 5200 RPM hard drive w/ udma5 (DMA on), 384 megs DDR 333) it takes 2 seconds to start. It usually takes 20 megs of RAM or less, 30-35 max last I checked.

Are you using GNOME or KDE? If you use KDE and the GTK-QT engine for GTK2 apps, that will slow those apps down massively...

(Not sure about whether it affects RAM use though. Also, I have no idea how Metatheme works as far as slowing of apps is concerned.)

Same here, FF has always taken ages to start, especially first time after you boot.

Also, that 'loading modules' botup section takes bloody ages as well, my Arch box ain't as lightning as it used to be.

Problem is, my flatmates come in, click madly at FF for the 10s it takes to load, then wonder why there are a million FF windows.... *sigh*

Loading modules takes ages if you use hotplug.

(That's been annoying me lately... I ought to just put my modules in rc.conf, really.)

Could you expand on this please? Firefox is taking me about 10 seconds to start in kde but also in fluxbox.

Re: Firefox in WinXP vs. in Linux

IIRC browser.turbo.enable doesn't work on Linux. Then again, they might have changed that...

Re: Firefox in WinXP vs. in Linux

Does seem a fraction more "responsive" at present on Windows - in terms of load time, after first load on Arch seems ok though.
