New testing builds

Hi community,
due to time constraints, we have decided to make a slight alteration in the release process. That is:
- we (releng) build testing images and publish them on the buildserver.
- releng does only minimal testing. we rely on the community to try them out and report back to us.
bugs go to the bugtracker under the release engineering project.
it's often useful to submit your /var/log/aif/aif.log to a pastebin as it gives me much information.
success stories can go in this thread or on the mailing list.
bonuspoints for those who supply patches. (or online git repositories we can pull from)
- once there is enough feedback, and and there are no relevant known bugs anymore, then we can do a new official release.

If you did an installation and it went fine, please report:
- platform (32bit/64/kvm/xen/virtualbox/..)
- automatic or interactive installation
- netinstall or core, dual arch image or normal?
- (if relevant: network setup, dhcp/manual, time setup manual/ntp, ..)
- disk setup (autoprepare or manual. what kind: lvm, encryption,..)
- ...

Hmm, sorry for my ignorance, but what is the difference between normal and dual arch?
One only 32 bits and the other 32 and 64 compatible?
Am I right?

what are you talking about? the downloads are not capped. I'm getting 300-400 kB/s

I assumed there was a cap since download speed was maxing out at 20-30 Kb/s. It still does btw. Strange.

Yes. *All* the new ISOs can be installed to a CD or dd'd to a USB key. This will erase the whole USB key. However, afterwards you can use fdisk to make new partititions in the unused space on the USB key, so long as you create filesystems with LABELS on all the new partitions.

The *dual* ISOs have both x86_64 and i686 files on them. When you boot from the image and get to the GRUB menu, you're presented with a choice whether to continue booting in x86_64 or in i686. There's also a third option something like "i686 in x86_64." (I'm not sure what this is: boot in x86_64 but install i686 packages? Or the reverse? Or something else.)

As before, you also have the choice or "core" images, which have a copy of the whole core repo on them, or "net" images, which don't. "Core" images allow you to do "net" installs, too; their only downside is that they're bigger.

Installation went fine no issues
- platform 64bit
- interactive installation
- dual arch
- network setup, dhcp, time setup manual
- disk setup manual , no lvm or encryption UUID used
ALl went smooth .

I tried netinstall image, I successfully created pppoe connection, but package sync failed (vc 7 says package sync error, NTP couldn't fix time, too )

did you install kde after booting the installed system, or from the live image? using aif or manually?

I just tested the new PXE boot script from the wiki on the Core image for dual architectures, works great!
I'm getting a new laptop which doesn't have a optical drive builtin, and I don't have a external USB CD/DVD-player. I prepped an SD card with CloneZilla so I can immediately make a backup image after unwrapping it. And another SD Card with a Ubuntu 10.04 Daily built Live image, to quickly test it with Linux.
After that, I of course want to install Arch, I only have 2 decent SD Cards to spare and my USB key is in use. So to avoid having to backup and format that one, PXE boot is a much cooler option

When I try to install dnsmasq and nbd, pacman wants to update itself. But when trying to it runs into a problem when it cannot replace itself because of a read-only mounting. Saying no to the pacman upgrade enables me to install those 2 packages, but I don't know if this can cause a problem on a later date?

Just installed arch in virtualbox from archlinux-2010.04.05-core-x86_64.iso manually,everything went fine.

good to hear.
you could also run dnsmasq/nbd from a normal arch machine instead of a live environment. so you could update packages.
i don't think the problem you mentioned should happen because it's an aufs, so please report this issue and provide detailed information.
But anyway, the next images will have updated packages. (ie updated pacman)

My new laptop has arrived. Currently performing an install...
Good thing I got that PXE working as the laptop doesn't seem to want to boot from Arch images on USB sticks (which other PCs boot off just fine), PXE works at the moment.
I'm at the first steps, I'll report back how it went and supply details asked in the OP.

I just made a fresh installation with 05.04.2010 and compared to the official 2009.08 this message no longer pops up during the base-installaion;

/usr/lib/aif/core/libs/lib-misc.sh: line51: =0: command not found

I always do net-install but you can see this messsage on various Arch-Installation videos on youtube, too. So everything went fine with 05.04.2010.
