[solved] Skype 64 bit

Hi guys,

seems that Skype is now available as 64bit binary. See http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-beta-ubuntu-64 .. I tested it on my updated Arch x64 install and everything works great!

It would be cool to have it on AUR or better in community..

What do you think?

This keeps coming up.... that is not 64-bit skype, its 32-bit skype meant for ubuntu's multilib system. I'm willing to bet your Arch x64 has lib32 libraries installed. In that case bin32-skype does exactly what you need.

It is still not native 64-bit though.

@ngoonee ops.. looks like you are right.. I removed all the lib32-* stuff and the "64bit" skype stopped working.. I really don't understand why they don't provide a 64 bit build for skype..

I think I'll push on Ekyga which is also free and open software.

And the reason they don't is because they don't. You can read on the skype website how many linux users have been asking for 64-bit support. Mainly, though, because the biggest user distro Ubuntu does multi-lib, there's no real push for 64-bit.

They will, eventually. I've seen idiots comment how 'all they need to do is run gcc --march=x86_64' or some crap, but as I understand skype doesn't own its own code even, so it would be tougher than that.
