Kind of a dumb question, but: can I get pcmanfm's mount ability to work with static mountpoints in /etc/fstab? That would be a heck of a lot nicer than relying on HAL.

From the pcmanfm README:
If a device is defined in /etc/fstab, PCManFM will call mount/umount directly.
Otherwise, HAL will be called to mount the devices. This is usually the case of
removable devices such as usb disks or SD cards which are not described in fstab.
Default options to mount various file systems on these devices can be changed
via editing /usr/share/pcmanfm/mount.rules. The file format is easy to understand.
Newer versions of HAL force applications to handle these options themselves.

Also:
while PCManFM has a new version in the making which uses udisks, but it does so via gnome-disk-utility, which is ugh.
That's from post #4 in this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=93958
I'm still using HAL.

Ah okay... I'd tried using just /etc/fstab before but it hadn't worked, the devices hadn't shown up in pcmanfm's list. Weird.

You may already know, but you can also automount using udev, independently of any file manager. I've no idea, though, if this is compatible with whatever pcmanfm tries to do - maybe you could disable pcmanfm automounting, and just use udev?
/etc/fstab is fine for your static devices, but I presume you're not planning to edit it every time you need to mount some random usb stick?

No, for random USB sticks I would just use the command line.

gnome-disk-utility works great. Though a bit overweight, but it works.
