No composition and some mplayer problems

Well as the title says I can't turn on composition in KDE
and mplayer won't play videos with xv ( x11 and gl works but they are too slow )

I tried

$ xvinfo
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
 no adaptors present

These problems occurred after the latest update yesterday
I have an ati HD 4670 video card using xf86-ati-video driver ,also I tried the radeonhd driver but it didn't solve anything

please help big_smile

Re: No composition and some mplayer problems

You can see which packages were upgraded in /var/log/pacman.log .Try downgrading packages that seem relevant. If the list of upgrades is too long post it here.

Something that seems to help with the ATI drivers in some cases is turning off KVM by putting 'radeon.modeset=0' at the end of the kernel line in the grub menu, and  setting EXA as the acceleration method in xorg.conf.

Re: No composition and some mplayer problems

I tried installing catalyst to see if it would help something ... it didn't , so I deinstaled it and installed the old driver again put back the old xorg.conf file and somehow mplayer recognized xv neutral

Then I downloaded compiz to see if it would work ( kwin is the one that doesn't want to use composition ) and it worked ... then I deinstaled compiz run kde again and composition turned on neutral

the problem is solved , but I would really like to know how and when and why
