here's what firefox looks like:
vidalia won't start and gives this error:
10:10 PM:~ $ vidalia: error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.0.9.8: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
TTF fonts don't work in pypanel anymore, I had to switch to a bitmap font. I don't really care about that, I just thought it might be related. I have no idea why firefox is such a mess - possibly that is an ati/xorg issue?
this is i686 architecture, openssl is v. 1.0.0-2. Should I downgrade openssl back down to 0.9.8n to make vidalia, and possibly ffox compatible again, or is that likely to break some other things?

That would break a lot of things. For the time being, installing openssl-compatibility from AUR will solve your problem.
For a cleaner solution, you need to rebuild whatever packages that are linked to the openssl. AUR packages would be the first place I'd look at.

Oh shoot - I forgot vidalia was AUR. Thanks, that explains it. For FF, I'll try the openssl-compatibility version, thanks.

firefox problem:

using that from aur is kinda stupid. just rebuild vidalie against new openssl.
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Thanks wonder - I just saw that thread. I suspected it might be an xorg/driver issue. I'll implement that fix tonight on my laptop, it's almost certainly the issue.
