I have trouble unmuting my microphones. I can play sound just fine, but even unmuting and setting volumes to 100% I can't record anything on my mic. One strange thing I noticed is that, if i use alsamixer, I see microphone is unmuted, but if I use GNOME's sound mixer, I unmute the mic, and after openning the mixer again I see the all capture is muted. Anyone has any idea on what could be wrong? I have a ICH10 sound chip, HDA intel.

Thank you folletto, but that thread doesn't apply to my. I do get a Mic Tab, but it doesn't work properly.
If, by any chance, I do need to specify to sound card model at modprobe.conf, how to I find out the right model name for my sound card?

In alsamixer, did you try to press space while the mic is selected?
Caused me some headache to find this out.

SoleSoul, I tried what you said and the only effect was turning the "capture" labels in series of dashes. But I still get my error: every time I open the GNOME Volume Control, all capture channels are muted.

The idea of pressing the spacebar in alsamixer to enable the left and right channel is wonderfull. I can finally hear myself, can't get enough of it
This "feature" of alsa is well hidden if you ask me.

This problem wasn't resolved with the release of kernel 2.6.33
