A few days ago I did some update and since then the volume is rather low.
On alsamixer I've set Master Volume and PCM both to 100% but I'm getting
only about 50% of the volume I used to get. Anyway, I'm not sure if the kernel upgrade
is responsible for this since a lot of other things were updated too.
Driver is HDA-Intel, chip is Conexant CX20549 and while normally I'm using ALSA
right now I'm trying OSS but the volume is even a tad lower here.

accompanied with minimal loss of sound quality and my sound architecture (or whatever)
since being updated doesn't allow to sacrifice 'quality' for volume anymore? (though the volume is
much too low now)
Help would be very much appreciated.

I will offer anyone who can solve my problem $10 through PayPal... that may sound desperate, but I AM desperate-- since all I use this Laptop for is almost exclusively to listen to music. I even started thinking I should give FreeBSD or Win7 (bah) a try-- so please, even if it is just a hunch... ;__; How can I increase my volume?
by the way, I noticed that when I go into the ossmix and change the "mode" under "green" from pcm to mix, then the volume becomes quite loud-- the only problem is the horrible sound quality. I used to get relatively high volume with good sound quality. -_-

You've said nothing about model=, which should be the first thing you try. Read Ubuntu help for starters.
