[Solved] Is HAL really necessary?

Hey ,

I used Arch a while ago, but started distrohopping again, since I didn't want to put so much effort in configuring my system. But now I feel ready to give it another shot

For a few days now, I've been reading the Wiki; and now I'm not quite sure if HAL is still really necessary.  I mean, udev can do pretty much the same things, right?
And I'm only using my laptop for surfing, office-stuff & as a mediplayer (my music is stored on a ntfs-formated usb-hdd.)

I'm still really new to the whole Linux-thing, so maybe I'm completely wrong; please correct me if I am

On the xorg wiki page it says
"If you are using Xorg 1.8 you do not need to add HAL to DAEMONS array or start hal"

so if you use xorg 1.8 you don't need hal ( which I think is still not in the official repo , but you can get it from AUR )

Xorg 1.8 is in a official repo called xorg18, but it will be merged to "extra" soon, so I suggest you wait for that. Still, if you want to upgrade to 1.8, search the forums for "xorg18 repo".
