This is operator error pure and simple. I shouldn't have tried an upgrade but did it anyway. I got this message after startx;
[/usr/bin/X: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypto.so.0.9.8: cannot open shared objectfile: No such file or
directory giving up.
xinit: no such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: no such process (errno 3): Server error]
It's not big deal for me to just do a new install but...what do ya think? Do I have any recourse any way to fix this?

There really shouldn't be any reason you need to reinstall. Besides, if you did, you would just end up with all of the same software on your computer that you do now.
Why do you say you shouldn't have tried an upgrade? What was the operator error that you did?
Also, what packages did you update that you think caused the break? Check the pacman log if you can't remember:
/var/log/pacman.logAnd one last obvious question: do you have "libcrypto.so.0.9.8" on your computer? ![]()

what version of xorg-server do you have? pacman -Q xorg-server
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

I shouldn't have done the upgrade simply because it was late, I was tired, etc...all the right reasons for the wrong outcome. Unfortunately I was called away so I'm away from that computer for most of the day so checking the log will have to wait.

I agree, I'd rather fix this and know than reinstall and not.
Anyway I'm fairly new to Arch but not to Linux. Admittedly I'm not quite up to speed with Arch's upgrade practices. I've been using Sidux for the last couple of years with good results. That's also a rolling release. It was fairly normal to upgrade/update every couple of weeks, pretty straight forward.
As soon as I'm back I'll follow up, check the log etc...and post what I find

Well to answer your questions;
what version of xorg-server do you have? pacman -Q xorg-server

And one last obvious question: do you have "libcrypto.so.0.9.8" on your computer?
No
Also, what packages did you update that you think caused the break? Check the pacman log if you can't remember:

> pacman -Si xorg-server
Repository : extra
Name : xorg-server
Version : 1.7.6-3So there definitely is an upgrade available. Try "pacman -Syyu" to for a refresh of your pacman db before upgrade. If that does not work, try changing to another mirror.
Offline
It might be to soon to say solved, but I think your onto something. I haven't been able to work with it for any length of time
Long story short, I switched to an up-to-date mirror started pacman -Syu , looked good, did the upgrade, rebooted, startx worked. But that's all the time I had. Tonight I'll get into it further. First impression looks good.
Offline
If it's working, there's nothing further to get into. You used an out-of-date or partially-synced mirror, which caused the initial problem. Now you have updated again from an up-to-date mirror, so all's fine.
Offline
Your right, everything seems to be back to normal. I do appreciate all your input.
