Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'm a little confused atm with the fglrx install. Specifically in relation to running two kernels, standard arch and a custom one. Simply put I removed catalyst-test when I added my custom kernel and then reinstalled it under the custom kernel. Then I rebuilt the catalyst-test package under the standard kernel and copied the module from that to the /lib/modules/2.6.33-ARCH/video folder. It works but on bootup into the standard kernel it gives me an error that fglrx module couldn't be found. Basically I suppose I want to know if there's a more proper way to install catalyst-test onto the standard kernel alongside the version with my custom kernel.

Sorry if this is confusing I just don't know how to better explain it. :S

You did it right, the standard kernel just dont see the fglrx module, so when you will be running standard kernel with copied fglrx module, try to refresh modules with:

depmod -a

then just:

modprobe fglrx
/etc/rc.d/your_dm_here restart

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I had installed Xorg server 1.8 and there was a problem with keyboard input in Wine. The arrow keys did not function. The other problem I had was that after boot my PC would hard lock upon starting X. I found this bug report:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=521655

I have installed mesa, libdrm and glproto from here and no problems so far.
http://www.jorgicio.net78.net/downloads … ableintel/

I now use Xorg 1.7.6, catalyst 10.4 (8.721) and kernel 2.6.33

@ my x86_64 everything is working pretty well. No problems with wine at all.
This debian bugreport is 1 year old, and this libdrm-2.3.1-3 which you are using is even older...
I guess this hard lock is appearing cuz xserver 1.8 got problems with your keyboard/mouse - defaultly there are only evdev and synaptics config files with arch's xorg-server package.
Jan de Groot (our xorg maintainer) said that there will be more config files for input drivers when xorg-server 1.8 lands in [extra].
So by now if somethings not working for you - you must to search for those configs by yourself, look @ arch Xorg wiki, looka @ fedora wiki.
Besides - there is no warranty that upcoming config files will work for you - so maybe doing some research is a good idea - its a lot easier when you have got additional [xorg18] repo, and you can safely rollback to stable 1.7.6 just by removing that [xorg18] repo from pacman.conf

You were right. It was not libdrm. I'm still having hard lockups upon starting X. Sorry for posting.

Well dont be sorry. Its always good to post about some problems. I have putted this [catalyst-test-xorg18] repo so everyone could test it and say does it work. There are some news in xserver 1.8 and its good to trace/solve them before 1.8 appears in [extra].
If there will be more problems with catalyst+xserver1.8 i believe its better to stay with 1.7 and put it to [catalyst] repo when 1.8 will be default xserver on arch.
Thats why testing [catalyst-test-xorg18] repo is very important...

Edit:
@kasper: Is your /var/log/Xorg.0.log telling something about those lockups?
Ie. run in single mod:
after lockup and reboot, before booting, when grub screen appear try to edit grub kernel line by typing 'e', and add '1' to it:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26-git root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/f07f2391-6b5c-47f5-a888-c5c64e116288 quiet splash ro nomodeset 1
Press 'Enter' to confirm, then press "Up arrow",
   root   (hd0,0)
should be on the spot, now 'b'
System will start in single mode.
Then edit /var/log/Xorg.0.log, or better copy /var/log/Xorg.0.log to some safe place so it couldnt be overwritten.
And paste it on the forum after succesfull reboot wink
Hah - you probably already know how to run in single mode, but maybe some others didnt know wink

Its fine now, with maximize-fixes for xorg-server its even very fine, i dont see any difference between this and oss driver actually.
It should be even better with upcoming d2d acceleration

Adobe sux with flash support for linux, so theres still no accelleration for ati nor nvidia.
Performance is fine, but there is a flickering with flashplayer.

Although we have got working vaapi:gl support now with catalyst 10.4 beta (aur's catalyst-test) so videos are finally fine @ fullscreen.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Like I have written before I enabled direct2d and 2d performance is great. However there are some bugs with images in firefox. Don't know if it comes from d2d but I think so.
You only need the maximize-fixed xorg when you want to use compositing (at least for me the problem only exists when using compositing).

Flash videos are ok but they are even smooter with the open driver. With catalyst the hd videos on youtube are a bit laggy.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi guys, just bought a Radeon 5770, and I'm a bit overwhelmed with the amount of data shared here in the forums about what driver to use and how to fix the most common problems... I've always been a Nvidia user, but since my last Nvidia buy didn't go so well, I decided to go for this nice priced 5770 ati card. So here are some questions: I've installed the catalyst-test driver for AUR, which as far as I understand, is the only way to get a working driver for xorg-server 1.7, and got the maximize-patched xorg also from AUR, but still miss some features, like VSync (I tried turning it on in KDE system settings, in catalyst control panel, and using aticonfig, but I dont seem to get it working) and fullscreen video playback, which seems to introduce a little lag between audio and video. Also, my 1680x1050 framebuffer console is gone, but that is not really important.

Any advice?

PD: BTW, what is that 'direct2d' thing you are talking about?

Thanks

In short it is where I left it, and since mune is a older card mobility radeon 3670 I do not expect it to support any new features.

I guess I should stick with OSS drivers.

Flash performance is fine with OSS drivers...does 3670 have VAAPI? how good it is compared to VADPAU

I have an HD4330. vaapi, although works fine, is not as good as vdpau on another laptop with a Quadro FX570M card. For example I still have a little bit of tearing using "vaapi:gl", but I have no such problem with vdpau. Still, this may be specific to my case, so YMMV.

Turn v-sync on with amdcccle.
5xxx dosnt support vaapi:gl for now, so use opengl as video output of your video_player to avoid tearing (it works only at fullscreen if u got composite enabled).

With vsync enabled I had no tearing in smplayer with mplayer-vaapi whatsoever with a 4xxx series card.
Without vsync there is slightly tearing, yes.

But with vsync enabled the mouse pointer is very laggy in many 3d games...

I tried using amdcccle to enable vsync in kwin, but it doesnt have any effect, not even when I force it. I have tearing when I move a transparent window, and I see the desktop is beeing rendered at 100 FPS, when it should be doing it at 60 to be in sync. On the other hand, It's pretty fast, seems like catalyst is going in the right direction. I'm thinking maybe it doesnt allow to use vsync in 2d?

Wow, thanks for your work!

You should be able to set it in amdcccle vsync "on demand", and just enable in whatever-your-player-is options. I enabled it on xbmc, and I play video without any tearing.

Thanks vi0l0, you seem to be doing quite a hard work to bring lastests catalyst updates to arch users tongue

BTW, with lastest catalyst, if I enable composite, all games show a lot of gargabe in the screen for like 10 secs, before working normally.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Have you seen ATI Overclocking Utility (requires qt libs) ?
X64: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/AT … ent=107457
X32: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/AT … ent=107458

With this utility you can simply underclock/undervolt/set_fanspeed (and save power - most native games should run fine on minimal core/memory/voltage values) of your card...
(i dunno is hd5xxx supported)
Heres how to enable it after downloading:
chmod u+x 107457-atioc_x86_64_105
./107457-atioc_x86_64_105

For the first time run it from konsole, and check what minimal (or maximal) values of core/memory/voltage you can set.
If console gives you some -1 error - it means that you exceeded min/max values.

Edit: and be careful with this utility wink
For me underclocking/undervolting is working preety nice - both my fanspeed(set to auto) and gpu_temp decreased.
So now my 4850 max values are:
core: 500 (was 625)
memory: 750 (was 993)
voltage: 1046 (was 1123)

On idle (well kwin on):
fanspeed got now 20-22% (was 26-28)
gpu temp got 77-78*C (was 80-81)  - high i know - referent card, but its working stable for 2years

Edit: Strange... i used ati tray tool on my dusty windows xp to undervolt card there, and it seems that this somehow unlock something (dark side). Now on my arch and with ATI Overclocking Utility i can underclock/undervolt to this values:
core: 300
memory 450
voltage: 936
so the difference is HUGE now(!) and everything is working normal (didnt check wine games, got none atm).
Idle:
fan speed: 7-9%
gpu temp: 72-73*C
LOVELY smile

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hai there. I've tried catalyst-test. Once installed, I typed "startx" -> does not exist.

What the fuck ? catalyst-test is installed, such as xorg-1.8-0.2, i really do not understand where I fucked up sad

I just type d

pacman -Syy
pacman -Suu
pacman -S catalyst-test
pacman -S lib32-catalyst-test-utils
pacman -S xorg-server // To be sure ?

xorg seems to be installed, but I can't run with startx. And of course I have the repo( [catalyst-test-xorg18] and [xorg18]).

Any ideas ?
