Hi! I recently installed Archlinux on my HP Mini 110 netbook via a usb core image. I can see an Archlinux logo at the top of the screen during boot using the usb stick, but this is not the case in my installation. When booting up my netbook, I can see two Archlinux logos side by side. As far as I can remember, this does not happen at the first time I boot my machine with a fresh install. At that time, I was using vga=773 kernel boot option at my menu.lst, but my laptop monitor does not support this and grub asks me for a new parameter instead. I'm sorry but I really don't remember clearly how it happened, as it did not bother me at first, but it's getting quite annoying that you see something wrong everytime I boot up.
The right way:
A
boot messages
scrolling on
the
screen
What shows up in my case:
AA
boot messages
scrolling on
the
screen
I have already corrected the vga option to suit my laptop monitor's specification (1024x576 is vga=866) but the problem still persists. I have also tried other vga options, both supported and unsupported by my laptop monitor, to no avail. Does this have something to do with intramfs, or do I have to recreate the logo? As far as I can remember, I mkinicpio a couple of times: once during installation, and once during post-installation configuration.

Is this Atom dual-core ? If you see two logos, that means "dual-core".

It's Intel Atom 280. Not really dual-core but it has hyperthreading. Does the logo really behave that way? I was looking through /usr/src/linux-*/drivers/video/Kconfig but I failed to notice a logo for dual-core machines.

/facepalm
It shows an image for each core, so if I have a quad-core, I'd get 4 A's.
Personally, I'd rather be back in Hobbiton.

LOL! I really don't know that it does such. I thought it was a bug. It looks kinda funny and I don't like it that way. How would I make it so that it would only show one logo no matter the number of cores?

I don't think that's possible.

I have a Core i3 330M (dual core w/ HT) so, if what's being said here is true, I should see 4 logos, right? Well, I see 3

Intel's hyperthreaded CPUs sometimes report 'cores' that are not physical. It varies from model to model.

That would explain the difference between 2 and 4, but 3?

Do your physical cores seem like they are working properly? I really don't understand much about how it works, but this is the first that I've heard of an odd number of cores on a multi-core system being reported.

You got it wrong. /proc/cpuinfo reports 4 core (2physical, 2 from HT) but during boot I see 3 logos. For me, it's only a cosmetic problem. Still weird though

Idk, maybe it has to with i3?

By that logic an i5 should show 5 right? Anyone with an i5 that can report?

I don't think that's possible.
Then maybe there is some way to circumvent this, like not showing a logo at all. I have used Gentoo a long time ago and I remember that they have a framebuffer theme while booting. It shows the Gentoo logo at the top with purple borders at the side of the screen. But I'm not sure if it also shows multiple logos proportional to the number of cores as I only have a single core box back then.

he he - I've had 3 - though it's easily explained ... one of these amd phenom cores with an error on them - leaving you with 3 valied cores ...

The relevant code is in drivers/video/fbmem.c; specifically the fb_show_logo() function, and the call to num_online_cpus(). If it's displaying the wrong number of logos, check /proc/cpuinfo to see if it shows the right number of processors. If not, something's wrong, possibly with the actual processor. If it does, then something weird is happening; maybe the extra CPU or core gets brought up after the logos are drawn?

the atom's are hyperthreaded and show up as 2 cpus to the system (in e.g. /proc/cpuinfo), I think avendael's trying to force a single logo (or no logo) to be displayed.
I know you can end up with no logo as a side effect of using KMS, but I actually have no idea how to force a boot without the logo, it wouldn't surprise me if there was a boot option you could pass to force this, but I don't know.

If you compile your kernel with your DRM driver built-in (not as a module), you will get the logo(s).
From a cursory look at the source, I think the "nologo" boot option should disable the logo.

I have an i7 and I get 8 penguins. Or are they 7?
I will count them the next time I boot the laptop.
