problem mounting jump drive in Xfce[SOLVED]

I just switched from KDEmod to Xfce. Xfce mostly works beautifully, except that my jump drive no longer mounts properly. When I plug it in, the icon pops up, but then I get a message that says

"Failed to mount "4G Removable Volume".
Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.28" (uid=1000 pid=7498 comm="exo-mount) interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member="Mount" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=4009 comm="/usr/sbin/hald)).

I was able to mount the same device easily in both KDE and KDEmod.

What fixes have you tried so far? There are a heap of posts her about automounting...

Thanks for the reply. First, I made sure I belonged to all of the appropriate groups:

$ groups
dbus hal network video audio optical floppy storage users

Next, I tried to mount the USB drive manually. I was not successful, but that is probably because I've never done this before. The relevant commands:

How do you start xfce? Using ck-launch-session is one fix.

A udev rule is another (both detailed in the Wiki).

Changing "exec startxfce4" to "exec ck-launch-session startxfce4" did the trick. Thanks!

Actually, you only need to be in users and video groups, if you use consolekit...

EDIT: Plus storage, otherwise pmount will put error messages in /var/log/messages.log.
