Hello.
If I enter some applications like Audacity, Heroes of Newerth or an application I open with wine (even happened with notepad) I have sound in that application but the rest of the applications don't have it anymore. I notice this doesn't happen all the time, but it does most of the times. Also in Heroes of Newerth if I go into sound options and let the playback device be "default" it doesn't work. I have to change it to "front:card=SB,dev=0" and if i do that, only the game has sound.
I had some user permission problems but thanks to loafer they're solved now

What do you have in .xinitrc. It should be something like "exec ck-launch-session startxfce4"
edit: console kit takes care of auto mounting and stuff like that.

Can't anyone help with this ?
I noticed that while my sound wasn't working i opened VLC and clicked advanced settings, went to audio -> output modules -> ALSA and changed the alsa device name from "default" to "HDA ATI SB:VT1708S Analog (hw:0,0)" and that fixed the sound in VLC. But the other apps still don't work. It's like it forgets what the output device is after i open certain applications.

I'm still having sound problems. I notice that some apps don't have sound until i set the output device to (hw:0,0) but then every other applications' sound stops working. This is basically the problem I'm having, can anyone help ?

Try using pulseaudio. Alsa alone does a poor job of playing sound from multiple sources.

By default, ALSA includes dmix which does support multiple outputs. ALSA is supposed to enable this by default, but sometimes it doesn't.
On the wiki we have a an article about it:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/All … Play_Sound
Take a look at the dmix section. It works great once its set up. The problem I had was that I found it a little confusing -- lots of trial and error. But, basically, the key is to use ~/.asoundrc and to comment at asoundconf (at least, that's what worked for me).
The problem with PulseAudio and wine, is that wine doesn't support Pulse--you need to use a patched version of wine (we have one in the AUR for 32 bit systems.) I was never able to do this successfully in 64bit. But, really, ALSA works just fine for me (no problems with multiple sounds -- I frequently have EVE online (wine), gmusicbrowser, and maybe a little flash going at once )
Good luck.

Thanks for the help guys. I tried dmix but that didn't really work so I then installed pulseaudio and this seems to work ...for now.
